Nice to have you around!

I do have a question about my daughter's Shifter 90cc buggy. It's kind of difficult to start. I suspect it is the battery....it won't cold start from the battery alone. I have to either jump it or plug it to a battery charger to get the engine to spin at a high enough rpm to turn it over. Am I right or is there another explanation? After the engine warms up, it will start from just the battery just fine.

It's a new buggy, we got it for her for Christmas and she's only ridden it maybe 5 different times.

Thanks,
Keith

In response to Tuskenjedi

That is a problem with all engines. Since the viscosity of oil increases as the tempeture drops it will be harder for the started to turn over the engine in cold weather. There really is nothing wrong with the vehicle. If the problem still exstists during the summer then you would want to start looking for damaged or broken parts, I would start with the ignition coil.

Email me back if warmer weather does not solve your problem.

Could potentially mean a battery that is not charged fully, is marginal or defecitive in some way, or is just not rated for winter use. There should be an upgrade battery available through the usually sources with more cold cranking amps.

Thanks guys! I will try a different battery with higher cranking amps, because it is still cool here. I think the last time she rode it the temp was around 45 so that plus a low battery may be the problem.

The manual for the Dune 150 has a picture of what nut to remove to change the gear oil, but it doesn't really match up with anything on my buggy... Do you have a better photo or can you describe which nut to remove in a way that I can find it?
Thanks....

It should look very similar to this earlier pic:

While temperature does affect the viscosity of oil, to say that "all engines" won't start at 45 degrees is uninformed, at best. We've started Twister karts with ice on them (although not often in the Dallas area, as it doesn't get that cold very often). Many of our customers play with them in the snow on those rare occasions when we see white stuff on the ground here. The engines are a little harder to start under 40 degrees, but turn over just fine, and if yours isn't turning over properly, especially as warm as 45 degrees, I'd be having a chat with my dealer. I would expect my customers to tell us, and we'd expect to gladly fix it.

As to the problem, I'd first suspect a weak or insufficient battery. However, if Baja says they all do it, they could have an underpowered starter. Regardless, you bought the machine to drive, and the dealer should take care of it. If the battery is insufficient, that shouldn't be your problem.

I respectfully submit you should take your kart to your dealer before your warranty runs out.
