Question pertaining to the cheese county trail system. Do they require the buggys to be street legal , licensed and insured? A major portion of the BN membership' are not. If any of the proposed sites require street legal as a stipulation, then a lot of members, especially those in the southern sections would be excluded.

Some states (or local jurisdictions) allow buggies on the shoulders or streets but I didn't think WI was one of them.

Hope this answers your question.
If you have any more please ask, I will try to answer them and if I do not know the answer I will find out what it is.

Here is the response from the city of Monroe regarding my inquiry on this topic.

Dear Sirs:

The City of Monroe has ATV Routes throughout the west side of Monroe, which are defined and established by the ordinance that you have referred to. These cover the vehicles defined by Wisconsin as ATVs (must be straddled). These routes, as you may have seen, are marked by the DNR green/white route arrows, and white arrows painted on the pavement.

However, IN ADDITION, the City has also, by resolution, declared these same routes as a BICYCLE WAY. The City does not put it's resolutions on web sites. By Wisconsin statute, the municipality can name what type of vehicles can be operated on that bicycle way. Our City Attorney has advised us that we can allow all of the motorized vehicles that are legal to be operated on the Cheese Country Trail, to be operated on the bicycle way. This would include your vehicles. This was done to allow Cheese Country Trail users to get to fuel, food and lodging. You can see all routes go to those services.

There are certain rules that govern all vehicles that use our routes, including the requirement to stay on the designated routes, to adhere to the 10 mph speed limits/stop signs, etc., for all routes, and to have the required trail use passes for the Cheese Country Trail. The Cheese Country Trail Commission (for the whole trail) requires any motorized vehicles, other than ATV's, to purchase AND DISPLAY, the Cheese Country Trail use sticker. This sticker is not the lime green out of state ATV use pass, but is a white with red lettering circle that can be purchased $18 at most convenience stores along the trail. The DNR also has been issuing some sort of "test" registration plate/decal for LUVs, and if your vehicles have something like that, this would also make them lawful on our routes. The Monroe PD does strictly enforce the stay on the trail rule, as well as the 10 mph speed limit/regulatory signs.

I can also recommend checking the Cheese Country Trail web site for all of the trail rules and for trail status, at www.tricountytrails.com.

I'm sure the City of Monroe and it's trail partner communities welcome your tourism, and certainly would hope that any large groups break into smaller manageable ones to prevent traffic problems.

I am very familiar with the trail as I also work for the Lafayette County Sheriff's Dept doing ATV Trail enforcement, and I remember seeing vehicles like you have photographed last weekend on the trail. In fact I talked to a couple of people on one.

A forfeiture as mentioned in the ordinance is what the process of a citation is called in Wisconsin. You forfeit a fine amount. The words forfeit and fine are interchangeable. It is not a forfeiture of the machine.

I hope this answers your questions.

Respectfully,

Chief Fred Kelley

Well St. Joe is in my back yard, and I Love going there, but I have always thought that we should go somewhere new every year.

I have heard good things about the Hatfield and Mcoy trail system as well.

Tigger...I asume the 10 mph speed limit at the cheese trail is just for the roads right? :(

Chris

Chris here is the information you're looking for it is 10 mph in towns and near homes and businesses for safety, otherwise it is 30 mph everywhere else this includes 30 mph on the road routes that are not in town. there are plenty of signs to keep you informed and the 10 mph speed limit only applies to maybe 10% of the trail system

So we would be limited to 30mph everywhere else? Shoot, I am not even out of second gear yet ...

We could not do any racing or anything...

The multi-use Tri County Trail is located in southern Wisconsin. Passing through wooded areas, prairies, marshes, and small towns on the path of a former railroad bed, TRI COUNTY TRAILS offers a unique multi-use trail system meandering through three counties in southwestern Wisconsin. Included are the CHEESE COUNTRY TRAIL - with 47 miles from Monroe to Mineral Point, and the PECATONICA STATE TRAIL - with 10 miles from Calamine to Belmont. For information on the additional trails available in Lafayette County, contact the Tri-County ATV Club or call 608.574.2911.

The trails are open to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-road dirt bikes, mopeds, motorcycles, horses and horse-drawn conveyances, bicycles, and hikers. Bicyclists should be aware that the trail is heavily used by ATVs, and that the trail surface is extremely rough in some areas. Mountain bikes are recommended. In addition, all users are urged to be cautious and courteous of the many trail-users traveling at different speeds along this scenic back-road view of southern Wisconsin. This is why they have a 30mph limit it is a family freindly trail system.

Stay awhile!
Lodging options range from campgrounds, to motels, to RV parks. Many offer easy accessibility directly to the trail.

I don't know if anybody remembers but when we did the first poll for a place for the rally, Durhamtown was the winner, then Steve changed it because Paddy's was closer to him. I would love to see the rally there.
