Whats the advantage of a air cooled 250 to 400 as oposed to it's liquid cooled engine of the same size? The only buggy that I know uses the air cooled is the Yama buggy.Air cooled sounds good no water hoses-water pumps or guages to go bad or leak or goofy fans that blow once in a blue moon-no liquid mix.How can Yama do an air cooled 250cc to a whopping 400cc when we need water and mix to cool our engines?I know nothing about a front radiator or oil cooled engine block system? mancoman

The cooler and more consistent you can keep the combustion chamber, the more power you and make and the longer the top end will last. Virtually all high performance dirt bikes and quads use water cooling. Only the low end stuff is air cooled now a days.
Fuel injection is next.

I am in the testing phases of my custom built project. We road for about 50 miles without a problem. I’m using a 16hp air cooled industrial motor, and does it fly! I think it handles the heat better than my gk-25. I think water cooled is better overall for larger motors, if it’s designed correctly.

All of the guy;s I talk to with performance built gy6's say the run better the hotter they are. My mowers run 25hp kawi's all day wide open in much more dirt than my buggy will see and never had a problem. I would'nt run my gy6 like that.

Water cooling must be somewhat effective on even small HP engines. Look at some of the 50cc MX race bikes. I think it comes down to a cost/benefit question. Low revving trail bikes are still air cooled. You can buy a brand new Honda 250 air cooled trail bike. Low power but pretty bullet proof.
Reminds me of one of my favorite gear head philosphies:
Fast - Cheap - Reliable
You can have any two.

To me the biggiest advantage to water cooled is piece of mind. Like I said I would never run my buggy like my mower I just dont think it could take it. My hh250 though, I'll run that all day wide open. This is why I wont race you that 2 miles manco. I will in the 250 but not the 150. I just dont like the idea of running wide open for that long on an air cooled motor.
Liquid cooling allows you to maintain closer tolerances in the engine without seizing and does allow better cooling, which both equate to longer life and better horsepower. When the liquid cooled 2-stroke dirtbikes came out, it was a massive difference in performance that I remember - but, uh that was a long time ago...

I 'm not sure how much hp you might gain but I can see the benifits for sure. After a while I'll park the 180 just to let it cool. Thats no good in a long race
