Any body have a good sorce for an alternator for a 650 SS. I have a 1000, and have looked at an 800 and they all seem to be about the same. Also has anyone looked at an older geo metro alternator to see if they are the same? The best price I have found is $115 plus shipping. Thanks in advance. Van

Hey Van I have on my 800 the "1987 Chevy Sprint" alternator it's exactly the same as the Chinese stock. Same price you mentioned $115 from AUTOZONE with a lifetime warranty. They actually work real well. I can get the Alt. #No. if you need it Let me know.

Thanks, I should be able to just tell them 87 Chevy sprint and get the right one. Mine has a plug that plugs in on the back, no terminals. Did the sprint alternator have the same plug or did you just crimp on some terminals? Van

SCORE

I did alot of research and found that the alternator we have been talking about from an 87 chevy sprint will work, but is quite different from the oringinal in that it is 55 amp and internally regulated, where as the buggy uses a 40 amp externally regulated. The alternator that is a direct bolt in, even the plugs are the same is a 68-74 Toyota Corrolla or 69-71 toyota pick up. The GOOD news is this alternator, part #14129 is about 35 to 50 bucks depending on the brand, including the core charge. Checker has an autolight for fourty dollars instock. I havnt done the swap yet, so I cant vouch for this, but I got it from a very reliable source who has one on his Joyner and from the eyeball test it will work for the 800 and 1000cc buggies as well.

So what is the amperage rating of the Toyota alternators? I know some people have upgraded their alternators to larger ones to run bigger lights, but am not sure if they're using the Geo of some other alternator.

There are actually two available a 40 amp and a 55 amp, both for significantly less than the 87 sprint the 40 amp was 32.99 plus 10.00 for the core and the 55amp was 36.99 plus 20.00 for the core. I looked several places and they where all about the same give or take. The 87 sprint is 55 amp, but the plug is different so you have to cut your plug off and change to one that will fit and you are also paying for an internal regulator you dont need. The best price I could find on the Sprint alt. was 115.00 plus a 50.00 core. Big difference in price. Plus it is nice to have the external regulator, because more than half the time when an alternator goes out it is the internal regulator, but you have to replace the whole thing. Should save us some money that way in the future.

I just put in the 74 55 amp Corrolla alt. today on my 650 ss. You need to add 3 washers as spacer's & you'll need to press out the lower bolt adapter ( 10 mm hole) & use the old one (8 mm) from the old alt. You'll also need a new belt (I got mine at Autozone Duralast #15345).
This alt. seems to be more stable 15v where the old one would go anywhere from 13-17v. Will be going to Barstow poker run next week & give it the test on some good night runs!

JB where is the voltage regulator? I have hunted up and down on mine and cant find it? Also did yours go bad, or were you just upgrading. Mine isnt charging right now, but i wanted to check the regulator first to see if it is that or the alternator.

It's bolted to the back of the battery tray & no mine did not go bad I just upgraded. Make sure you have a good ground, I did burn one up when I added lights & didn't have a good ground .
