Thanks for the pic. I got the same bender as you. I just was'nt sure if it was a side or top bender. I will be testing your concept this weekend probly

The sand thing is a myth. And here is why if anyone watched the video on here from "Dope customs" he says he doesn't know why the tape doesn't push off when he bends the tube. The reason why is when you bend tube your not shrinking the tube your stretching it so the sand isn't tight in the tube any longer. That is why the sand trick is a waste of time when you start to bend it is getting looser no longer pushing the inside walls out. Also he sated that he modded the die that is probbably the real reason why it worked.
i can see your point i don't know why you would need sand if you are using a regular pipe bender. but sand bending is not a myth there has been alot of back yard exhausts made that way and get the bend you want with out collapsing the pipe.they don't use tape at the end. mash one end shut weld it then fill it full of sand, then take the pipe and it hit it down on the floor packing the sand tight keep doing that until it is full.then crimp the other end shut weld it.mark the area you want bent.take a torch and heat that area what you want bent make pipe red hot,and you can bend it. i thought about doing this when and if i make a new exhaust.i was going to do this the last time but i went the faster way for a fix. a lot of the old timers didn't have a pipe bender laying around when they needed something fix or made. i'm not sure how thick of pipe can can bend though.

I have seen guys do exhaust pipe this way but it still give the pipe a flat spot. And this wasn't a right up for exhaust this is for dom hrew .120 tube. I have tried alot of ways bending tube over the years the last thing I would do is heat roll cage tube and bend it as this will change the strength of the tube.

that is totally my bad probably shouldn't brought this up here i guess i was just meaning sand bending wasn't a myth. also i did say i didn't know how thick of pipe could bent. and by the way again i didn't say a thing about bending a roll cage . now back to your scheduled programing

No big deal I'm just saying the sand trick with this bender is a waste of time. If you just take your time with the bender and use the right die you can make bends with out all the extra work.
