It isnt a bad idea, they used to do it in the 50s to hot rod cars. The problem as I see it is you cant take out a full link, because you would have to mill the block way too much to get it to fit again. We are only talking about a few thousandths of an inch that get milled off and loseing a link off the chain would be more like 1/4 to 3/8th of an inch, way too much.

Makes sense , that true, removing a full link would obviously shorten the chain too much. I only thought about it being doable and reliable, failed to consider that point!
Could it be possible to modify the tensioner for more throw to take up the extra slack? Or adding a thicker backer to the chain guide? In theory, it could be be done on the 150's.The 150 design is basically a spring loaded plunger that keeps tension on the guide. Increasing the tip length of the plunger proportionately can take up the extra chain slack due to head decking. Just thinking out loud here.

mill the area where the tensioner bolts to the jug so it sits lower to make up the difference?

I had my 250 all apart when I owned it, did'nt consider looking
at that when apart, but if I remember, I think you can
go with a thicker chain guide, like Charlie said. We,ll find out
in a month when we tear down Goose 67's 250 to put another
new case gasket in it.

I contemplated either extending the plunger or adding extra backer to the chain guide. The extra backer idea is a lot simpler. I would use two new chain guides and cut one down to use as backer material then glue a section in place. I just can't figure what sort of adhesive to use. It would need to be able to handle the high temps of hot oil , impervious to oils and gas and also maintain some flexibility. I don't know if such a creature exists.
