I'm new to the forum, so I apoligise upfront for being a noob. I have a pair of 1980 fl250 odyssey's. I love them, but they're just getting too old to be reliable. I've completely rebuilt both of them and its always something else breaking. Anyway, I thinking about getting a new buggy, but seeing as how I'm used to an fl250, what is at least on par with the fl250. I'm considering like a HH 250, but want to know if its on the same performance level as an odyssey or do I need to go bigger to match the performance of an odyssey. Thanks.

If you get one of the smaller 250s, with some mods it will perform about as well as a fl250, espesially a one seater (hard to find). What you will find is the suspention is way ahead of the 250fl which has none. Get a good one like a Joyner and then if the performance isnt what you had hoped, you can turbo or engine swap and have a really nice machine.

Thanks, that's kinda what I was thinking. Does anyone know how useful the low/hi transmissions are over the standard ones? It seems like having two gears would really increase the performance spectrum of a buggy.
welcome ermann - out with the old and in with the new huh! Most of the 250cc with lite mods would be comparable. As far as that goes the 150 with some mods do very well. If your looking for single seater, easier to get in the 150cc. Check out sycpowersports.com and click on products to see the Blade buggys. I have a HH150 with mods listed below. (more to come ) And I do very well matched with the 250's. I'm not as strong or as fast....but they don't leave me! and I climb what they climb! just a matter of taste I guess. I like the 150's due to the smaller size for trails and the modding options are greater.

I think it will be hard to equate the power output of a 2-stroke verses the 4-strokes. You will have a much wider power band with the 4-stroke, but you will not have that "sweet-spot" peak of a 2-stroke. If you like to haul full throttle, the 4-stroke performance will be disappointing while at the same time your body will be thanking you for the much better suspension. If you run tight trails, the narrow Odyssey will out maneuver the wider buggies, but the torque of a thumper will get you through areas more gracefully.
Both engines use CVT's, but a dual range CVT gives you ultra lows for crawling that a 2-stroke will choke on...

He forgot to say "If you like to waste money" get a rhino. A modified 250 will out run a rhino and in all but the most extreme slow climbs will out perform it. Rhinos have there purpose but competing with buggies isnt one of them.
