Flux Core Welding

Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:52 am

So, my cousin is a welder. He went to shoccl for welding. I think it's funny that today he tried to tell me that there is no such thing as welding without gas. What a mother fluxer... Seroiusly though, he also said welder cost $10,000. Now I know that some cost that much but not one to weld a buggy or anything like that. You can get one for $110 at Harbor Freight that I heard is usable.

I started off with a flux core welder then converted to mig when I got more money. Some people think they know it all...

there is a flux core wire welder that works good, they are cheaper to operate, I like to use the shielding gas with mine

You want a really pretty weld with a cheap welder? Run the gas bottle and use flux core wire!! You would be surprised

We use gas with ours all the time unless of course we're outside and can't get out of the wind. Then we'll use a flux core welding wire. Or if we just want a weld that we don't care too much about... You can weld with a stick and some wire plugged into an outlet. It's not safe nor is it good, but it is welding and its not $10,000.

i had to quit using a stick welder 14 years ago
after a heart attack & pace maker installed
but can use a mig safely i use flux wire only
but use it with gas also
i think i paid around $220 for my welder

I got my MIG at Tractor supply for $120... It was a return. I use gas with flux... Keeps the splatter down with the 110v welder.

ditto on the Harbor Freight, works fine for me

Not that I've found but I no welder. My welds usually end up looking like boogers so I usually grind them down to look nice. When I rairly lay a nice bead, I have to call the wife and kids out of the house to show off.... The gas seems to keep the slag from splattering everywhere. My highschool shop teacher would say: If you can beat it with a hammer and it stays together, then it's a good weld :) .

Yeah, I know you can use flux core. I think my cousin is just used to all the fancy equipment and never had to by himself a welder. I just thought it was weird he would say that though. Today I tried to get him to read the thing on the Lincoln website and he just said yeah I know you can but it'll cause porosity. Which dosen't mean you can't do it now does it? :D

Thanks guys,
Just thought I'd share what he said.

LOL
I cant help but comment on this...

In my bizness; Im often reminded how much more important
"good ole fashioned Common Sense" is,
than all the book learning in the world...
:D :D :D

Hey, he has no common sense. He shouldn't be a welder.

He will find that out to hard way .

Gas or no gas, my welds are always ugly, but been holding so far, Harbor Freight 129.00 for me. (gasless)

The flux core is good for dirty steel, where as the strait wire with gas is for clean or new metal. If you are getting too much spatter when welding either with flux or not your heat and wire speed are not set correctly. A good weld clean weld will never be achieved with the harbor freight welders. I personally have had 3 of them and kept bringing them back cause I could not weld with them. I have also used a friends and neighbors Hbr. Frt. welders and they did not weld very well as compared to Chucks Lincoln, or my Hobart. Now I'm not a certified welder but I have welded enough to where my welds do hold and do not resemble bird sh&t on a metal post, but at the same time I do not weld enough to produce the pretty flat flow weld an experienced welder can. now thats funny wright there.
you see more and more of this in the world to day.
i agree with team farm 100%
how have we survived this long with out brain childs like that.
sounds like his teacher or school is either one way there way or no way and no body elses is wright.

this is not about welding but have have seen things like this and experienced it. guys go to school for so long, just paper work after paper work on all they know but then the decide thats not what they want to do and go down another path.than its takes three guys with eyes in the back of there head to watch over them from hurting there self or some one else, don't want to use common sense about things but only argue what a book says or how they think it should be done

Believe me, he is not book smart either. . I'm not going to say al the reasons why he is stupid because my hands would get sore fromtyping. He can be smart sometimes though if he cares. But he cares about nothing but 2 things.

Anyway, when I said I saw something about a guy building a dune bbuggy with a gasless welder from Harbor Freight for $90 he sarcastically said I bet he did. Someone who taught him must of absolutely hated flux core without gas. Or msybe he just used junk flux core wire and thought it was always like that. I don't know...
