Got a pair of 2007 Eton Rovers! Another MPDano Project

Fri Dec 16, 2016 10:38 am

Guys,

Got a pair of Rover 90cc's for my son. I got them about 3 weeks ago and have been getting back up to safety as well as running. Both had bad batteries so I couldn't run them when i bought them. Bad gas as well as welded extended pedals. Here's pics of when I picked them up about 160 miles from my house. They are rare here on the West coast, but still hard to find on the East Coast.

The Red Rover right off the bat wouldn't start with the key while pushing down on the brake pedal. I could jump the starter solenoid and it would start. Looked at the manual and it has a switch at the brake master cylinder. Saw a broken wire and fixed that starting issue.

Plastic painted the rear bed on the Rear Rover as well as the rear black fenders. Also, cut and re-welded the pedals so they are now normal and not extended.

Also, there we some missing plastic pieces from both Rovers and was able to buy them online. Battery covers, engine cover, tailgate, etc.

The Red Rover had and aftermarket Keihin CVK and Blue Rover had the stock one. Neither ran well, even after a good cleaning. I ended up buying a 20mm Keihin CVK for the Red Rover and a rebuild kit for the Blue one.

Put the 20mm in the Red Rover last night and it was night and day.

Also, put a 37 pilot and a 95 main jet. Blue Rover will get a 90 main.

The Red Rover was missing the air filter, so got some universal Uni foam and cut to fit. I oiled it per manual. I changed the oil to manual specs 15/40 and immediately noticed smoke out the tailpipe.

The level check is at an angle and you can see the oil almost dripping out the fill tube. Not a very good design.

Would overfilling cause smoke? Or should I just go to 10/40 weight oil. Kinda stumped on this one.

Nice find. Always liked those things and never see them around here, either. Nice work on the plastics. Just curious, does the cage need to be that tall?

I don't think that's adjustable, but anything is possible with a cutter and welder

If I sit in it, it's just about right. I know I know, it's for my son. He's 4'7" and it's a good fit. Hopefully I can get a couple years out of them. He's sprouting on a daily basis now.

Never have seen or heard about these before. Pretty neat though.

Yeah, kinda stumbled upon a video of one and then started looking. We're going to the Desert on Monday so scrambling to get these done.

I also bought a new chain for the Red Rover, it was rusted and binds. I tried to use penetrant and it helped but wasn't satisfied with it.

My son is excited to try them out.

Got the new chain installed on the Rover. Drained the oil and put exactly .8 liters back in. Installed a new spark plug and she fired right up.

Still got a little bit of smoke, wondering now if the valve seals and/or piston rings are worn. Great power though.

Spent all day getting the Rovers ready for the Desert. Rubber Foamed and Taped all the roll bars. Rebuilt the Keihin carb for the Blue Rover. Shortened and welded the Blue Rover Pedals, now they are back to stock. Oil changed on the Blue Rover.

Still got some smoke on the Red Rover but too late to try and fix that. I see smoke coming from the CVT Cover Vent too. I'm pretty sure I put too much oil in it when I first changed the oil as I has the rear raised and it was dark so I didn't realize it. Most likely blew a seal somewhere.

I'll deal with those issues after the trip.

Will do at the Desert. Too dangerous to let the kid test ride around the backyard pool. Not saying I didn't fly like a madman around my pool with them

Hey all, just got back from the Desert camping trip and both Rovers did flawless. Blue Rover has a too small pilot jet but gonna get the same 20mm Keihin for it prior to the next trip since I can't find a larger pilot jet for it.

The smoking on the Red one seemed to get better as my son rode more, but you couldn't even tell since it was kicking so much dust from the rear wheels anyways

Heres a quick vid of my son running on some berms and whoops. I had a great chase video of me on the Blue Rover chasing my son on the Red Rover but my Gopro decided to go on take a picture mode rather than shoot a video :x
