New cart that ran good for a few days. Then went to put it in reverse and lost all power to the rear wheels.

I've pulled the CVT cover and the belt is fine.

I've pulled the variator and it is working fine. The slides are in good shape. Verified the belt is riding up and down the pulley during acceleration.

The clutch is newish. Previous owner said it was updated with a high performance clutch. Bell housing shows KNM and it has a big yellow spring it it now. I pull the clutch and everything looks to be in good shape. Everything is clean. No signs of heat. The only peculiar thing is that as I rev it, the bell housing is spinning. If i try to slow it down with my finger I can get it to stop, meaning its not engaging.

On the right side of the axle, I can get the fwd/rvs housing to switch directions by moving the lever back and forth. I tried loosening and tightening the cable to no avail. I have the rear tires lifted and at full throttle it will just barely spin the rear wheels.

Any suggestions?

Does the buggy have an external reverse box?

Yes, I think so.

There is a round module on the axle next to the chain and the cable from the Forward/Reverse lever is attached to it.. It has 2 halves. When I actuat the Forward/Reverse lever one half of the module spins in opposite directions depending on whether its in forward or reverse. I tried adjusting the cable (on the lever side) from tight to loose with no change.

If you rev it and you can hold the bell the new bell might be to big. Take the clutch off again measure across the pads then measure the inside of the bell. My bell is about 4.920 id.

The KNM clutch and bell were a smaller diameter than any other clutch offerings. If parts were mixed from another source, that is your problem and you need to contact KNM for parts or replace the clutch assembly and bell with a matched set.

I believe the entire clutch was replaced. The clutch itself and the bell housing. It was working fine, and put 20-30 miles on it since i bought it. No idea how many miles the previous owner put on it. Pads on the clutch are thicker than a quarter - maybe more.

Concerning the reverse assembly. The half that has the sprocket/chain is what is spinning - but just barely. And it will reverse directions when i flip the shifter.

I guess if that shaft is not spinning coming out of the clutch - it has to be the clutch, right? Is there anyway to test the clutch? Can i rev it up and see the anything moving to verify operation?

I think the clutch is shot or just glazed up

Between the clutch and reverse assembly is the final transmission. You may have sheared a gear or shaft if it does move in forward or reverse. If you can spin the clutch bell without spinning the the rear wheels, your final transmission or reverse assembly is at fault.

To get to the final transmission, you will have to remove the clutch and pulley to access the cover plate. Drain the 90w gear oil before opening this plate.

so i drained the tranny oil, and pulled all the screws. Started tapping the tranny off the housing and thought, man, this doesn't make sense. I was able to turn the clutch side shaft and it would turn the reverse assembly but not the wheels. When i grabbed the chain and rotated it, that would turn the wheels, the reverse assembly AND the clutch shaft. hrmm....the chain is a little lose...but that has to be a mechanical connection to the shaft...RIGHT?!

I tightened the chain and boom, everything now rotates as I suspect it needs to. put it all back together, but now the battery is dead. I suspect I am there, but can someone explain why a lose chain would cause this? I'm wondering if my reverse assembly shaft is stripped or something.

I'm not crazy. Tightening the chain didn't help.

So the engine is definitely spinning the reverse assembly. Its almost like the sprocket disconnected from the reverse assembly.

Figured it out.

I ended up pulling the reverse assembly. Upon doing so, the small chain sprocket was completely disconnected from the reverse assembly. All 5-6 bolts holding the two together were broken off or missing. I can't seem to find that piece, and I really don't want to spend $200 on a new one. Is the easiest option to take it to a machine shop and have them back these broken bolts out?

Parts are in and about to put it back together.

I bought a new oil seal to replace the previous one in the reverse assembly. Is there gear oil required for the reverse assembly? Or is it just greased?
