thanks guys,
if i decide to get into the carb and adjust the floats, where should they be set at?
is there a chart or measuring tool to use?
that's one thing i haven't messed with since i've had the buggy.

chuck, that's one thing i never understood with my buggy. while re-jetting, i was going up through the jet sizes until i got it to run well and i ended up with the 145-150 range jet. everyone else is running 135-140 and i don't know why mine won't run smooth until i put the big jet in it. i figured the 145-150 was way to big but it doesn't run rich and the plug is a light brown color.

float level height 18.5mm measured from the mating surface where the float bowl attaches to the bottom of the float

I am guessing that your fuel lines, fuel filter or petcock are too restrictive. I use to run a 150 main jet in my 150cc Yerf-Dog until I upgraded the fuel delivery. Now it runs a 140 main (which is still large) and is happy.

I see that nobody mentioned a compression test. With the uni filter people run it allows more dirt and water to enter into the engine causing it to wear out faster. I would borrow a compression tester from someone, and put everything back to stock, and get a new stock spark plug and go from there. Once you get a good base line and its running perfect you can go back and start changing things until the problem surfaces again.

The symptoms dont sound like a compression problem. You see those most on hot starts and it's consistent not here and there. I also run a uni and not a drop of dirt.

DZ, thanks for the input and i'm not trying to sound like a smart"you know what" but i've done the compression test and i'm actually above 150 lbs on the gauge so i know the compression is o.k. i've adjusted the valves, changed the plug, CDI and coil so i'm leaning towards BIGE's comments on a loose wire somewhere on the CDI. it doesn't act up all the time and i've been running the same jet for a while now with good plug color. that makes me think wiring. i'll be messing with it this weekend so i'll post my findings and we'll all know [-o<

o.k., i lied, one more question.....
if or when i decide to upgrade the CDI or coil, should i do them together? does it matter if you do one or the other first?
