Im trying to get this buggy running for a friend for her sons Christmas. When she bought it the distibutor was out. Which would have been a Lightbulb for me not to buy unless it was dirt cheap. If it were a chevy I would have it running already, but this chinese motor is a mess. Can someone tell me how you would reset the distributor and timing in detail if possible.
What you need to do is pull off the timing case cover and verify that the timing belt is lined up properly the manual will show you the marks and how to time the belt.
When you know that the cam and crank are timed properly remove the valve cover and turn the motor over clock wise watch the intake valve for cylinder 1 go down and then come up and seat. This will get you close to TDC (top dead center) for cylinder 1. The exhaust valve will go down and seat before the intake that is the exhaust stroke if it doesn't you are turning the engine the wrong way. It is easy to tell which valve is which because the exauhst vlave will line up with the exhaust maniflod and the intake valve will line up with the intake port of the intake manifold.
There is an inspection hole on the bell housing use a flash light and make sure the timing marks lines up with 0 you may need to turn the engine slightly but it should be within a few degrees. Now identify the number 1 cylinder plug wire on the dist cap (number 1 cylinder is the front cylinder closest to the fan belt) take a black sharpe pen and mark a line on the distributor body that line up with the number 1 wire then remove the cap and slide the distributor in when the rotor is pointed at the mark you made with the sharpe it is in the right place. When you slide the distributor in the rotor will rotate it needs to point at your number 1 mark when it is in all the way in if it is not pull it out and rotate it slightly to catch the right tooth to line up. If the distributor does not drop in all the way you may need to rotate the oil pump drive to match the distributor use a flash light and look down the hole the distributor slides into. You can probably use a screw driver to rotate the oil pump drive to match the distributor don't turn the distributor to match the pump or you will be off time and it won't run.
Now look at the lobes inside the distributor there will be 3 for a three cylinder turn the housing counter clock wise so it is just before the center of the lobe on number 1. That should get it to start so you can put a timing light on it. The manual should give you a similar procedure but you can follow mine and it will work. Post any questions you have.
Just remember they pulled the distributor for a reason putting it back in properly won't necessarily make it run if there is still a problem with it. Mike
