If you are upgrading a Joyner 250 I would recommend using this thread in conjunction with the thread below. I used both of these and had no problem doing it myself and I am not a mechanical guy.

First time posting on the site, but I must say the information on this site is amazing.
I am trying to repalce the CVT drive belt on my Carter Talon GX150IIR but I can not get the nuts off of the variator and clutch housing. I have tried two different pneumatic impact wrenches and a long torque wrench. I actually broke a couple cooling fins off of the variator when trying the torque wrench.
First, any ideas to get the nuts loose? Second, will the broken variator fins hurt or should I replace it also before getting all this completed? If replacement is recommended, any suggested places to purchase a new one?
Thanks,

Those nuts can be very difficult to remove - especially since it seems the manufacturers have discovered red Loctite!
Get a strap wrench and a buddy to hold it tight while you use the impact wrench on it. That should help.
As for the broken fins, it is advisable to have all of them on there intact. You can create some minor vibration from the imbalance of the plate (6-7k rpms is a lot of potential vibration!). This can lead to unpredictable wear and tear, as well as diminished air flow potential.
I've got replacement fan plates for the 150s on my site, as well as instructions for your CVT mods/belt replacement. Most of the other dealers that hang out on Buggy News should have this part, as well.

welcome to buggynews, those nuts can be hard to get off sometimes. make sure your air compressor is putting out all the pressure it can. I have sprayed some wd-40 on the nut. you have to be careful and get it all off the variator.
If the fins that are broken are straight across from each other then it should be fine. I think I have one if you need it

I will get a strap wrench and try that. I have definitely sprayed them, the compressor is maxed out about 115 psi. I'll give it a go tomorrow and we'll see. I'll will certainly replace the variator fan cover. I agree on the potential vibrations at high rpm.
Thanks for the help.
Man, these things are addictive, huh?

...I think that quote should be under the BuggyNews banner at the top of the page.

I like the $10.00 used one. Do I call you at McDonough Powersports on Monday?
I got the nuts off today, with a high-torque impact wrench! That made it easy. I did find out that I need a new clutch also or can you just replace the shoes?
Thanks for the help guys!
