Does the 1100 Joyner really need a turbo? No-unless you spend most of your time racing the sand dunes or you just want more power than you could ever use. That said, my son Jeff (Trmn8tr) and I each bought turbo kits from Scott at Unleased Motorsports (Turbo Dude) a few months ago.
The kits included a Kejin TB28 turbo with header, head pipes, connection joints, blow-off valve, FMU (fuel management unit), VDO boost gauge, mounting brackets, hoses, clamps, hardware and heat shield. The kit was complete with everything except a good set of instructions, but Scott was great at answering phone calls and e-mails to help with the installations.
Everything fit nearly perfectly. The hardest part was boring a 2" hole in the Joyner's 1/8" thick steel dash for the boost gauge!
The next weekend we loaded up and headed to Sand Mountain (the big one in Utah) for a test run. I started to apply the power and watched the boost gauge hit 5psi and then the power went to zero! Let off the gas and then tried it again - same thing. It felt as if the fuel shut off as the boost start to rise. Bummer. The problem ended up being that the fuel system on our 1100's was not the same as the 1100 Scott had used to develop the kit. The FMU is designed to work on a fuel pump system that has a fuel return line - our's only had a direct line from the in-tank fuel pump to the injectors.
A call and some photos of our fuel system to Scott and he had the solution. He sent us an EFI boost pump and instructions on how to set it up with the FMU.
We got everything installed and headed back to Sand Mountain for test #2. HOOEEE! Major difference! I could go into a steep 100-200 foot climb at 5000 RPM, mash the throttle and it felt like the JATO rockets had just ignited! The boost leveled off at 10psi and the power felt like double stock.
Is it worth the cost and effort? Oh ya.
THE GOOD: Everything fit. High quality parts. Tons of power. It really sounds cool! Fun factor increased by 2X Cost way lower than expected.
THE BAD: You need 100 Octane gas @ 10psi. If your not a pretty good mechanic, don't try it. If you're not a tuner, or you don't understand what a turbo can do to your engine, have someone who does install it.
MODIFICATIONS: I didn't like the rubber hose for the pressure oil line to the turbo - replaced it with 1/4" steel. I Installed some needle valves on the FMU and fuel return line so I could set the static and full-boost fuel pressures.

The Turbo that I had installed by Thunder before they shipped the 1100 only has 5 psi boost. Still a major difference over stock. I backed out of it at 75mph but it still had more to give.

I have nothing but good things to say about Scott and the guys at Unleashed Motor sports. I bought my Joyner 1600 from them, they put the turbo and intercooler on. I also had lots of questions and Scott was great at getting back to me everytime.
This past weekend was the first ride with the turbo installed. Wow, it was fun. I hit some whoops at around 80 mph and the suspension soaked them up and the motor just kept making power. All the guys I was with were very impressed with the quality and the performance.
Next ride will be over Thanksgiving at Gordons Well.
Jeff

Excellent, I was wondering when you were going to comment on your turbo installs.
I wish there was somebody local here in Reno to install one because I don't know if I want to tackle it myself.
How much boost can you go without going to a high octane gas?

Well, I guess I'm not going to LS with you
I hate being the slow guy!

Jim -Ya, I knew you were waiting for some info but I've been bogged down by some medical problems in my family and I wanted to wait until I had the turbo working right. You wouldn't need to have someone install it for you - you could easily do it yourself. If you limit the boost to about 5psi you could get away with using 91-93 octane premium unleaded.
F-16Guy With your 1100, you'll never be a slow guy! Jeff and I will contact you sometime in the not to distant future - I want to see your 1100!
Pay attention to the Octane... Running Premium with Torco Unleaded Octane Booster doesn't quite work, went lean, detination and now waiting on new piston to show up!

Octane booster?? That stuff is snake oil as far as I'm concerned. It says it raises the octane several "points", but what they don't tell you is that they mean "tenths", so your octane rating goes from 93 to 93.3. It's quite a scam. I normally mix 100LL avgas with premium in my quad, but I'm pretty sure leaded fuel in a fuel injected car is not good for the sensors or the cat, so you'll probably have to break down and buy some unleaded race fuel. That stuff ain't cheap!!
