The current engine has a part number of LJ276MT-2. These are the Chinese manufacturers of this engine (that I could find):

http://www.wuling.com.cn/doce/doce/prod ... uct03.asp#

http://www.lingdico.com/en/Product.asp? ... e%20Engine

It comes in transmission variants allowing cross or lateral mounting and with dual and single locked or dual open outputs. The engine can be powered by gas or propane. This engine is variant of a Mitsubishi Vulcan 2G24 used in the 1970's and 1980's.

It has been used industrial applications and in the 1984 Mitsubishi Minicab 700.

Pete, nice bit of research... This paragraph caught my attention...
Quote:
Models with MVV engine and 5-speed manual transmission are fitted with a Lo-Hi range transfer. The Townbox models offer a choice of two fuel-efficient, ecology-conscious engines. The new 3G83 MVV leanburn 3-cylinder 12-valve SOHC engine is tuned for bottom-end and mid-range torque and delivers peppy power, and the 4A30, 4 cylinder 20-valve DOHC intercooler-turbocharger engine offers excellent efficiency from low-engine speeds to deliver outstanding take-off and smooth acceleration. The engines are integrated with either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.
Diff engines, But if there were a 5 speed &/or Hi-low range to be had for our LJ276MT-2's this would be AWESOME :!: 8) :!:
If you could source us (me) a hi-low (bolt up & ride) trans... you could Name Your Price, as to a finders fee... I'd slide this into monthly bills as "equipment repairs" & my secretary would never notice :D
You's the resident Research Guru !!!

Those were newer and larger generations of the engine line. I do not know if any parts cross over.
