Last night we installed the Malossi variator kit from BIGE on my friend Marvin's GTR250. We didn't get to test it out yet since we had storms last night, but we are planning to do some riding tomorrow to test to see what difference is made with the 20gr rollers that come with the kit.
The kit came with and inner variator half, a yellow clutch spring, space tube, and 20gr Malossi rollers.

The clutch spring should be a definite improvement over stock. It was literally twice the length uncompressed.

Probably the biggest benefit of the Malossi variator is that it uses the same rollers and sliders as the more common CF250 and CN250 variators, which gives much more flexibility for tuning compared to the stock GTR250 roller sizes.

Another benefit could come from the profiles of the roller ramp and lift plate. The ramp on the new one seemed to be shallower which should cause top gearing to come in more slowly. It wasn't a lot of difference but noticeable.

Below is an image of the ramp plates.

The belt surface profile was also different near the center. The profile goes flat near the center, which should cause the belt to hesitate just a bit before it jumps up onto the cone and starts changing the gearing ratio. We will see. I also noticed that the new variator has a rubber seal around the space tube.

All in all a very good kit, everything fit perfectly. I'll post up tomorrow with the results of the difference. We're running the 20gr Malossi rollers that came with the kit since the stock GTR rollers were 20gr as well. This will give us a good back to back comparison of the difference that the variator and spring make. More to come....

Video of the variator on and working. It's not real good quality since it was dark, but you can make out when the belt starts moving compared to the engine rpm...

Update: We went to go riding Saturday, but lightning and hailstorms ran us off. Marvin did get to run the GRT 250 a little and said the CVT ratio definitely stayed lower , longer, but once it started changing to the higher ratio (don't know at what MPH yet) it happens quick (which is good). We're gonna try to ride some this weekend and get some video as well as test the hill climbing ability with the new variator. More to come....
