Several local importers of the CHEAP 4 wheelers appear to be getting out of business all of a sudden here in Houston. One here is selling 200cc engines, with reverse, brand new for like $300. Thought I'd call to find out what the scoop was and he stated that a lot of these ATVs coming in, labeled "ride on toys" when imported have been painted with lead paint.

Surprise. Well with the new toy-safe-import legislation, he was indicating this was going to halt or hamper imports. That along with the reliability/quality issue (really????!!!!) of the 4 wheelers has the dealers/importers jumping like rats off a sinking ship.

On top of that, I noticed the Craig's list adds for these things has really mushroomed - maybe it's the season - after Christmas, etc. but this section of the powersport market looks like it's finally carpping out.

Is this just inuendo? It makes sense, but I don't know if it's reality. I'm going to run by his warehouse with him and see what engines he has to offer - purportedly tons...probably all too small (200 or under).

Well that has been happening all over the country since the new law went into effect. All the ones around here have sunk. We have a ton of those things in for repair. All of the good companies will be ok the bad ones are jumping ship. and I am glad :D

Eric - I don't blame you a bit. I kept thinking everytime I saw one of those cheapy 4 wheelers for sale that it's something the poor buyer got into not knowing that he'd have to work on it and that it was disposable after all.

I'm guessing this doesn't really impact the buggy market.

Yes it does. Those cheap atvs are lot of time made by the same people like Blade. BigE as had a few post on this subject and many of us have sent out letters or phone calls to show support. As well as write checks :D

yes it does effect the garbage buggys. People bring them in for repair and wonder why it cost 30-50% of the purchase price to get it fixed and they are the same people that said our carter, kinroad and ams buggys were to expensive even with a good warranty.

devilville even atv discounters have had there customers bring there crappy little stuff to me for repair.

Just after I decided to become a dealer for buggys we were looking around for some other fun units(atvs and motorcycles) to represent.

One distributor stuck out in my mind. When asked about warranty and the longevity of his products, he replied that if they last 8-10 months then that was good.

He expected people to pay $750 to $2000 of their hard earned money for a machine that would last less than a year. I said no thanks.

Glade
