Saw this listing and wondered has anyone put one of the old 2-strokes in a buggy? I love the smell of a 2-stroke first thing in the morning http://bgky.craigslist.org/mcy/1360889807.html

I dont know if someone has yet or not but I thought about this too after looking at how the fl250 drive train and axle mount up to the oddy frame. I think it could be an easy swap, as long as width of the buggy frame lines up with the width of the oddy axle mounts. Very beefy mounting too would handle any abuse, especially with actual suspension above it.

well, not sure if this applies, but we took an old oddy that someone had yanked the rear from and we welded a frame from a Kawasaki 1100 between the frame rails then welded a rear swingarm section and axle from a banshee between the swingarms of the kawasaki using spacers to align the sprockets....that was an interesting project. Luckily we had a motorcycle/atv/buggy junkyard about an hour north of us, so after a month of tinkering and parts finding, we finally got it finished. We had a total of ~$900 in it, including the cost of sync'ing the carbs. That 1100 was a real nice upgrade to the belt driven 250 that was originally the drivetrain for it. Plus the sheer length made it a famous sand dragster on the riverfront, rofl.
The only problem with a set up like that is the length makes it no good on jumps or trails. And 1100 is to much hp to be that slim. I bet that sucker was fast though

You have no idea, we first pulled it out onto the straightaway with regular street tires on the back, it had rained some that day and we couldn't get a good straight take off without centering the kart with the center line of road(the high crown made it wanna go sideways on take-off). Easing off the clutch, yeah, it did good, and yes VERY fast. We got ahold to a machine shop that made us a 38tooth sprocket(it had a 55tooth), and the front sprocket was a 15tooth(found an 18tooth on ebay). I actually felt the motor bog when I went into 5th at 90. I sold it on ebay a few months back with the extra original sprockets, buyer said he wanted to put a turbo on it and use it for dirt drags. I made sure I told him that I was NOT to be held responsible. Even I'm not THAT crazy, altho that may not have been that bad an idea. *shrugs* -Mike.
