Hello Again,
I think I am going to paint my buggy. I would like to paint it with a small paint roller if possible. What kind of paint would be best to roll on?

And, I would need a Primer, some coats of paint, and a clear coat right?

Thanks in advance.

Check out this thread

Your best option would be to spray it.

I saw that thread but I have a few problems with spraying though.

- I'm not that good at spraying evenly
- I don't have the equiptment
- Other than outside, I have nowhere to spray

If you have a compressor you can get a cheap spray gun at Harbor Freight that actually work pretty well.
If not, use spray cans. Buy quality paint like Rust-Oleum, Krylon, etc., some red Scotchbrite scuff pads, and some wax and grease remover(paint prep solvent). I like Krylon's adjustable fan tip. It has a wide pattern and it's eaiser to spray, no finger cramp.

Scuff the whole thing down, sand any rust -w- #80 grit sand paper, prime any bare metal areas and most importantly wipe the whole thing down with the wax and grease remover to be sure it is very clean. Then just follow the directions on the can.

As far as spraying evenly that mostly applies to metallics and pearls. if you stick with a solid color you should be fine. And doing it outside shouldn't be a problem either. It dries fast.

If you can, flip it over and spray the bottom first covering as much as you can then when you get it back upright spray the rest. This helps be sure you don't miss anything. Also work from the top down and take your time. Usually when you rush things like this you run into problems.

I think I might actually wait a bit longer. I should probally do the work on it before I paint it so I don't ruin the paint anyways.

But I heard that spray paint won't last. I'd rather spend some more money to get the good stuff. I don't have a compressor, but I've been thinking of getting a "portable" one.

And lastly, since I already have some bare metal, should I sand it down to all bare metal?

But, is rolling paint on the main frame and big areas a bad idea?

Sorry for my ranting :)

I couldn't find the post, but there was someone that rolled on pickup bed liner material on his frame. This paint/sealer was designed for roller application and will stand up to abuse.

If you want something that will really last and look like a new buggy, powder coat is the only way to go. A local shop around here will do a full race car frame for $400 bucks , so if there is a shop around you they may do a buggy frame for a reasonable price.

Actually, I'm not sure about the compressor. I would just get a cheap one anyway. But I don't need it to be extremely durable. I think I will get a sheet of paint protection film to stick on. When it starts peeling, ill just order a new roll. That way, I wouldn't even get scratches :D

I really like that Firemist Red paint from TCP I saw in the other painting thread! But, I don't want to copy.

I'll check out the liner too though,
Thanks.

Seen an old truck once painted with a roller, oh my what a finish, rougher than a dryed ear of corn.

I painted mine going on 3 years now and it has held up . If you do paint it the prep is the most important, next would be the paint used. I painted mine with the best Dupont paint, I also painted my son's using Dupont. Both were done with a base clear system. If you go this rout you can expect to fork out 250.00-300.00 for the paint and the good primer. You can use a cheaper paint but you will be repainting much sooner. But as I said even if you use the best paint the paint will only hold up as good as the prep. Your best option, since you lack the equiptment and the expertice would be as stated a couple posts back and this would be to powder coat the buggy. I have a friend who had his 68 Camaro frame done for 375.00 this included blasting the frame and powder coating. TOM
