well when it rains poo around here it all comes at once.

here is my question, first i'm no computer guy. in my world i was never around them and what i do know is self taught which is not much.
ok i shut my computer off the yesterday morning and when i went to get back on it it would not come on
monitor was on, push power button on computer it fired up but then made a beep sort of inside then screen wouldn't come up.
i had almost gave up after messing with it even tried a different monitor and power cable that i know was good.
i thought maybe hard drive took a hike on me.
could it be the power switch on computer not letting something do its thing.
like i said i know nothing about them. alot of times when i shut it down i just go to standby if i'm going to be back later then just it space key to fire back up.
i had it completely shut down when this happened.

any body know what happened here. i'm afraid now to shut it down.
didn't realize how dependent i was of it until this happened

any help or thoughts
i had been looking at my local phone book for repair shops
its a dell 2350 lots of memory left got it in 003, didn't really use it much until i got into buggys and here.

I had my monitor go on me last week, are you sure the other one you tested was working?

last year my dell monitor started acting up like a picture tube in tv
color was doing crazy things.
so i hook up the monitor i had that was given to me and it work fine.
now i'm back on the dell monitor and power cord, it did the same thing.
but the last time i tried to get it to come on it didn't make a beeping sound and screen came up.
the power switch has a few wires thought maybe there was something wrong with it.

Pull the side cover off, check to see if your hard drive is plugged in. Unplug and plug in again. Happened to me with brand new puter.

Make sure that:

Keyboard is plugged in, and in correct slot
Mouse is plugged in, also in right slot
Monitor cable is plugged in

Some times the cat pulls the plugs out.

Alot of time the beep you will hear is a POST code. If it does just the single beep then that is the normal POST code. If it gives you a couple of beeps you need to look up your computer brand and get a manual that tells you the POST code beeps.

I'll be honest though I've seen this many many times. You board is probably dead. The older canister capacitors like to swell and die. Next time you look inside look to see if any of the capacitors have swollen tops or look like they have leaked something. Oh and if you don't know what capacitors look like they are like little coke cans.

If you have it hooked up to a backup powersupply try taking the powersupply out and just hooking it up to the wall. If its not that then your MotherBoard is prob a goner. A new one won't cost you that much. Googled it and you have a standerd size board. Might be a good time to upgrade to something more recent then a P4. heres a exact replacement http://www.comused.com/servlet/the-3633 ... 350/Detail
If you were closer I would fix it for free. (plus the cost of parts)
Go ahead and upgrade to a laptop. They are much better. :)
If you replace your MB then you will have your data.
If you upgrade to a laptop you will have to get a cable to hook up your old hardrive to the laptop to retreive the data.
If you don't have anything important on there then go right ahead and hit up craigslist for a laptop.

well i check everything you mentioned kiffing well just look i couldn't see any thing wrong with my eyes
only time this thing will beep is when it won't come on all the way i guess, sounded like two beeps.it done it to me again tried starting over pushing power button last time i did it i sort of held up and button and push in and it fired wright up.when its working wright i sort of hear more of a click then things coming on.
like i said i'm no computor guy but i think it is the power switch causing the problem.
weekend here and company i will just have to get by, last time it happened i left it on standby. when i shut it down tonight i will try what i did to switch and see what it does.

thanks for your guys help it does help me understand more.

Sometimes the bios on these computers can get into a non-state state. It won't know what to do. I rarely shut computers down all the way unless it's (1) a laptop or (2) I'm moving it. If it's a newer computer (< 3 years old) I like to just leave them running.

Setup the power settings on the computer to turn the monitor and the hard drive off after ___ minutes of no activity. I don't use a screen saver at all. I find them annoying.

I have a total of 6 computers I use all the time. Of those I only have one that gets shut down every day and that's only when it's in my backpack.

thanks for the offer marsrover.
what are you saying that i'm still a dinosaur even though i have a computer but a old one now :) just kidding.
but i do feel like one i have listen to you guys on here talk about things and i have no clue.
when i went to school we didn't have any or i have any games that hook to the tv.now i have boughten alot for my kid but just never took interest in them. then when computer started getting big and every one started getting one for the house i was still lagging on that.
not trying to offend any one at all but just never could catch my interest.
but i do miss one now when i don't have one its got me out in the world on alot of things.like parts, talking here or just reading things on the net.
i thought about getting something else when i get caught up on some things.i have things on this that i really don't need but the kids used it for writing and home work when they came in that help them.
would like to be able to do some video and watch a dvd if i wanted.

The power supply or main board in the computer are beginning to fail. As previously posted, this usually is a result of capacitors drying out or leaking. I suggest home users look for replacements around 7-8 years, so you are in that window.

I suggest getting another desktop PC over laptop unless you need the mobility. You will get better performance for the dollar from a desktop and parts are easier to replace or upgrade.

Some people ask about upgrading their older systems. The fact that all the components are 7 years old means they are near the end of their life and perform poorly compared to current parts. Why put a new head on a motor with 200,000 miles?

It very well could be that the hard drive is taking a dump.
It's common and will cause the problem you are referring to. If it can't read the info for startup, (Stored on the drive) it doesn't know what to do.
If you got a startup disc with your computer (Most do), try booting off of that and see what happens. If it still won't boot then it could be the power supply not putting enough juice out to power everything or the Motherboard. Either way, it sounds like it's time to upgrade. If nothing else, when you do get it to boot up, back up anything important to you while you can!!!

I built the computer I'm using right now. I deal with viruses and that's about it. It most likely isn't the hard drive though. If it was the hard drive, it would have nothing to boot and go to the BIOS screen. The BIOS screen just looks like text. If you see nothing at all, like the monitor is off, it could definitively be the video card. The video card is what shows the video. But, if you turn on the computer with the speakers on, you should be able to here the windows booting sound. If you hear that, it's the video card.

We should be able to find the problem by eliminating what we know it isn't. Though, you should get a new computer even if you just get a $300 dell or something.

Hey guys,
I too do a little computer repair,
2 things that come to mind is have you replaced memory lately, Try pulling them (or it) out and puting it back,
Also like Manco12 said it could be in the video card, if it's a card try pulling it and putting it back also, if it's intergrated (built in) theres not too much you can do with it other then finding someone that has a video card they dont need and instaling it.
Just a thought......

You could see how many RAM sticks it has. If there are 2, there's a less chance it's that. If one failed, the other one should still work.
