First of all I'm new to buggynews and recently purchased a Joyner 250 shell. It has no motor but wasn't really interested in swapping back a cfmoto. This is my second 250 and really wanted something with more power. What engine would you guys recommend I swap in. Any input would really help. Thanx.

I think that the majority opt for Polaris swaps.... I believe if I was doing it I might search e-bay/ craigs list to see what is available-Pat

You probobly would be best served asking the guys who have done it.... you could get thier attention by directing the question to "Jolaris" owners.. although I'm sure you will get some responses once they are back in from riding.

The most common swaps are the 400 Polaris 2 strokes and the 500 polaris 4 strokes. I am currently swapping a 500 in my 250 Joyner and hope to have it up and running in the next few days. When I have it done I will post a build thread here for those interested. I do have some posts over on Buggy Country .com that show what you looking for. These engines really wake this size buggy up.

Pretty sure they have a differential. Where are you located, and what motors are readily available there?

Another swap that is worth considering is the geo metro swap. There is a thread on here that details a swap into a roketa 250. No reason a joyner wouldnt work as well.

if you opt for the 500 polaris swap just be sure to look for a scrambler. they are chain drive. the 500 sportsman is a shaft drive.

ps the older 400cc.. 2 stroke polaris Trail Boss has a huge cvt clutch...we have one sitting on the side of the garage for a future "swap" into my wifes 250 joyner... it probably has 2 to 3 times the power of the 250 4 stroke moped motors

I have a 2 stoke 500cc Yamaha snowmobile motor. I need funds for machine work to mate it with one of my Chinese gear boxes, plus I need some parts for the gearbox.

Personally I would like a Raptor 660 or 700 motor, good power and torque, manual tranny with reverse.

i have eyeballed a couple raptor engines myself. i just can't seem to make up my mind whether i want an auto or shifter buggy. there rae advantages to both.

That's easy you already have a automatic buggy. I do agree with you that there are advantages to both, but the manual is just more fun to drive, unless your trying to wiggle your way through a rock pond.

Raptor motor does OK for a 4 stroke. But no where near the power of the polaris 2 stroke. Years ago polaris had a 250cc engine called the cyclone that was a monster. Too much for the general public, so they tuned there motors way down. The 400cc 2 stroke can be made to put out 70 plus HP with just bolt on mods, and very easy to work on. Go to gen3.com to learn all about the polaris motors.

Thanx for all of the input guys. I was just wondering how difficult it would be to do a manual conversion since I would need to install a clutch pedal and run all of the lines.And what about the Polaris engines? Since I don't have much to do fabrication what would the difficulty level be? All input helps.

The polaris swap is one of the easiest out there. You just remove the tranny and motor as a unit, drop the whole thing into the buggy lined up with your sprocket, support every thing, three wires to hook up to make the motor run, extend the cables and shift linkage, plumb in an oil tank (two strokes) or run mix gas. Hit the gas and hold on. lol That may be a simplifing it a little, but there isnt much more to it.

Has anyone considered a LTZ400 engine for one of these. I know a shifter makes it a little more difficult but??? I would probably make a suicide clutch/shifter combo. The good thing about the 400 is that it has reverse. However, how about the power ratio?

I have been considering it because Polaris's around here are hard to find, they are usually running quads and people want big money. I happen to have an LTZ and would take the motor them part the rest out.

Just a thought.

Same in Vegas, Polaris are usually owned by hunters and are in great shape, since they are only ridden seasonal.

What kind of torque an hp does the 400 put out? Engine swaps are a lot of work and planning, if you want a professional finish. So you don't want to put a motor in that you will be ready to scrap in a year.

this is a ltz 400. I totally understand what you are saying about not wanting to have to pull out a motor and do another if I am not happy with it. I am going to run the 250 as is for now while I mull it over.
