My father in law purchased a 2000 Kawasaki Mule about a year ago. He has replaced several steering parts and braking parts. Got a call earlier in the week from him that it was jumping out of low range and making a grinding noise. I asked him if it was in forward or reverse and also high range. He stated that it seems to be in forward low range and had not tried high range yet. Since then he has been using high range and everything seems to be ok but it is hard on the machine as he usually pulls a small trailer around and has some hills to climb. I read somewhere that it was a dog gear/gears causing this. Any ideas?

i know on what we have you can bust a gear if you don't have foot on brake when switching from high low, rolling when you do it or just putting it in gear. i'm not going to lie man i clunk it hard on the ride foot slip off brake when going back to high.i can see it happening

understand about needing low range to

If I remember right they are not that much different then a buggy tranny. They have dogs on the gears so when they get worn it will jump out of gear just like the HH trannys do. He may want to make sure that his linkage is shifting all the way. The problem is tho the more it does it whether it be linkage or gears the gears just get worse and will need to be replaced. Oh and by the way, Kawasaki is a lot more proud of their parts than HH or joyner is.

we had one in the shop last week that would barley go in gear. we adjusted the cables and it was better. I would try that first to make sure its going in gear all the way.

Thanks, I will try the cable thing first then go from there. Where do ya recommend getting gears from if it comes down to that?

If the adjustment don't do the trick, I would tear it down to see just how bad and what is needed. I got my stuff from the local Kaw dealer.

I spoke to my father in law today and he said he had tried adjusting the cable both ways and it was still grinding so it looks like we gonna tear into it to see what wrong. We no longer have a local deal Kaw dealer but there is one about an hour away and I drive past it usually couple times a week. Just wish there was a cheaper option than the stealership.

Do you have a manual on that? If not I can copy parts of mine that you may need. I have to check I may have another source for parts, it has been a while.

Rich if you don't mind sending some pics that would be great. A pic is worth more than 10 pages of written material. And yes Eric that will be part of the process, baggin and taggin.

My father in law got to messing with things and adjusted the low/high range cable as far as it would go and got it to working without any more trouble. Said he has been running it around for a week or so pulling his little trailer loaded and has not jumped out of gear any. So maybe it was just an adjustment like yall had mentioned.

Talked with him more a couple days ago while cutting some firewood and told me he had been messing with the forward/reverse stuff to start with. Then it dawned on him to try the low/high and it went to working. Kept thinking that it "should" be in the low/high cable but never got time to go over and try it, and he got to it before me.
