I agree on the rollers too... When I took mine out after a few months... the variator was CAKED in belt-dust... that could contribute to your problem. It would feel less obvious then a skipping chain, but still create a jerking feel if the rollers are getting hung up on dust. Clean out the variator, and get a can of compressed air and blow out the CVT casing really well.
The bearings aren't too bad to replace, just be careful putting new ones in so you don't wreck em. There's a few posts on here how to do it fairly easily. It takes a bit of work, but nothing you can't handle!! New bearings are reasonably cheap... around $10-20 each.
The bearings you need are a #6206-2RS (rubber sealed). The stock ones aren't rubber sealed, which is why they wear out so quick. I got mine at a local bearing and transmission shop.
You have to strip the axel and take it off to remove the bearings, so while you're at it, I'd suggest changing out the 32 tooth main sprocket to a 39 tooth. It really helped my low-end power, without losing too much speed. Y'know that "bogging" feel when you climb a little hill? It'll be a thing of the past.

Thanks
I'll see if I can go get some of those bearings tomorrow wherever.
Do we have the same year buggy? Mine has plenty of torque but I wouldn't mind upping the torque.
The engine is running great right now, just gotta get these little problems over with.

As far as I can tell, it's an 05/06. (like a new car this year is called an 09).
After I changed out the axel sprocket, I could feel the difference in the first small hill. The buggy climbed with practically no effort at all. I'm more worried about getting DOWN steep hills safely now. Getting to the top isn't really an issue, if the traction is there.
It doesn't suck you back in the seat on take-off, but it definitely felt like a more powerful low-gear for hills. So depending on your terrain... I consider this one of the top mods for the money. Got mine from BigE for around $40.
I've spent more then that on chocolate for the wife.
(But I think the sprocket was sweeter.) It certainly got me in and out of more tight spots... more often ... eh hem

I think mine is an '06 or '07. I counted the teeth on my sprocket and I am pretty sure it was 32. And the wiggle on the axle may be less than 1/4" or whatever I said now that I see it again but I am positive it is the problem because the chain was sorta popping or whatever. Hopefully my dad can get the bearings today or I will get them tomorrow.
I'll have to wait on getting the sprocket. Right now I don't have any money.
Another thing that I am having a problem with are the studs on the hubs and the hex nuts. They are very cheaply made and they are tearing up. I think ricduncan has some better ones that I've bought before. Oh well, the fun never stops.

That's the great thing about these machines RC... I didn't know anything about engines, mechanics, etc.. until I owned my talon. Now I can't stop!
If you don't have a lot of hills... don't worry about the sprocket. It's a great mod.. but not everyone needs it.
There's plenty of tinkering you can do without any cash. The most important thing is to have fun, and keep learning!

Very nice post, Mike. I totally agree.
Oh, and I got the bearings today...FOR $4.50 EACH! haha I got them from a hardware store called Fastenal (not sure if they have them in Canada) but that was cheaper than I could get them on the internet. It makes me extremely happy. I hope I can get them on without messing it up too much.
And I didn't find any threads with the search saying much about changing axle bearings. If you could link me to one that would be awesome! I may just go at it and see what trouble I can get into.

Well, I got the bearings out and cleaned the fittings and what not. Now I just need to get the new bearings in. Should I pack the assembly with grease or just leave the bearings as-is?

Triple post...
The bearings didn't fix the jerking, though I am still happy I got some better bearings on it.
I now think the problem is the drive gear is slightly loose. I'll try and see tomorrow.

Hahahaha... I was just gonna tell you how to get those bearings back in... ya beat me to it.
Glad the bearings went smoothe.. they were a little tricky for me. If anything... you got new bearings, and some experience taking that axel off.
Did the new bearings just drop in for you? I used a combination of heat and freezing and a little careful pounding to make them fit properly.
And like the suggestion earlier... clean out the CVT really good and make sure those rollers aren't getting hung up on dust or dirt. That will cause a little jerking too.
