Has anybody done a full repaint , if so how did you start painting, I mean where, as in not to have a ton of over spray, and would it be best to go with the HVLP setup, and a smaller gun.......I am in the process and thought I'd ask, maybe pick up a couple of pointers.....I have been removing bent items and replacing them with new pipe, and am growing closer to color it,..... I get a couple of pix.....
this is 16 gauge tubing it's no good , I picked up 18 and made a new corner today, I didn't get a chance to get any pix though, it's welded and primered,

when I was restoring cars I would soda blast the body. baking soda works well for removeing paint and slight surface rust. it doesnt leave pits and is eviromently friendly.
use air to clean up the frame, wipe it down good with wax and grease remover, use a good eitching primer around two to three coats work well. you can use a red scotch brite pad or 400 grit sand paper to scuff the primer.
as far as paint goes you can spend as much or as little as you want. I like the urethanes. they hold up very well and are afforable. a good single stage will work fine. I use a hvlp binks spray gun with water traps inline with the air line.
the hvlp can put alot of material on with reduced over spray, use some good fans to get the over spray out so it doesnt settle back down on your work. a GOOD resporater is madnditory along with long sleeve shirt and pants

Thanks Eric, I did decide to go with the single stage, fast, I need to work with the shortest dry/cure time as I don't have a booth, and the baking soda idea is cool, I picked up a water seperator and HVLP set from the MAC man, I would supose I would have to start from the inside of the kart and paint the bottom of steering column area, which is my main concern, I was not going to bear metal, I did some research and found alot of the guys just rough up the powdercoat, heres what I decided to go with paint wise

you can scuff the powder coat up good, I would prime it with a dark gray or red oxide primer. that will help the paint cover better. a gallon should be more than enough. start on the inside and work your way out, get at least two coats on the inside before moving to the outside.

Progress, still lost of prep work to do, I would like to shoot some primer over the whole thing, and then do the fabric covering system, need to stategically place strap hold downs, I am still waiting for the fabric, so......Pix..
