I think the rings for a standard 150cc GY6 are around 57mm... can someone confirm?
I'm in the same boat... glad to see I'm not alone. (maybe "glad" is the wrong term...sorry) I have new rings on order. (uh... I hope they're the right size.. now I'm wondering!)
To replace the rings... will I need any special tools? I was told I need a "ring compressor" or something like that for larger engines. Same for these little 150's?

You wont need any special tool .just make sure theres a chamfer on the bottom of the jug do one ring at a time as you slide the jug down make sur u oil the inside walls take your time its easy. You can do it!!

Glad you have confidence in me Funnyman...lol... I'm sure I'll get it done alright. I was also a little nervous about rejetting, etc, until I dove in there... it was a sinch.
Excuse the dumb question... but what do you mean by chamfer?

Chamfer = small bevel at the end of the cylinder to help ease the rings in. You will pinch each ring closed with your fingers and push it into the hole one at a time til the whole piston is in the bore. It's one of those "3-hands" jobs if done without the compressor.
Oh--when you install the rings make sure you stagger the gaps so the oil & pressure doesn't have a clear channel to run through

so 57mm rings is what i need for 05' talon???
Sure hope so Keater... that's the size I already ordered for mine!! The way I understand it... 57mm is for 150cc piston, 63mm is for 170cc, but the larger rings are for a larger piston obviously, which won't fit unless you bore out the case. That's a little more work then I'm prepared to put in.
If you get to your rings before I do... post some pics of your progress, your success (or mistakes)... the more pics the better. Learning from each other is what this site is all about afterall....

The Howhit engine has a slightly smaller piston requiring 57mm rings. Most other buggies use 57.4mm rings.
Quote:
There are two 150cc piston sizes, 57mm and 57.4. Your piston, rings, and cylinder must all match one size (as a set) in order to fit properly. The 57mm bore is known to be used in buggies with HOWHIT engines.
Known 57mm engines: Yerf Dog GX150 (w/ HOWHIT), Baja Dune 150, Crossfire 150. Known 57.4mm engines: Yerf Dog CUV. If your buggy is not listed here, please check the bore size of your cylinder with the original manufacturer.
HOWHIT bore: 57.0mm (147.5 CC) Standard bore: 57.4mm (149.8 CC)

Sure... now you tell me!!
I'll have to wait and see what comes in the mail... pretty sure I only ordered 57mm. Fingers crossed they're .4mm bigger..
Lucky for me, rings are fairly cheap. Just means another delay if they're wrong... I think withdrawl is setting in
