After reading these comments... I've never felt worse for a fellow buggy/ATV rider. You guys have it bad!!!! Like... your serious? 4 hours drive just so you can ride, Chris? My jaw hit the floor when I heard that. I feel SOOOOO bad for you guys.

So, when you get to the "approved" area, how big is the park? If you were to ride every trail once... how long would it take before you start repeating the trails? And are there restrictions on type of buggy, size, traffic patterns, etc?

The closer place was EMR. It's only 100 or so acres so you could ride just about every trail in a day... We ride with the Northeast Buggy Association guys so we always have fun. The places we have available to ride now are really not developed yet. Most of them are small, home-type areas. One of them is quite large but really not developed for buggies.

For us it's more of the riding company, the poeple we ride with, that's the largest factor. The park(s) we ride at are secondary. We, the NEBA and MBRA, are working hard to develop better places to ride.

Yes, riding locations in the Northeast are a big issue.

As Geek said, Ocotillo Wells is probably the best place in California. Of course we have a lot fo large open areas for riding.

Gorman(hungry valley)--great place but watch those trails. They can be tight and people come at you from all angles. Accidents are common.

El Mirage--This is a good palce for riding buggies. The hills have a lot of rocks and there are open mine shafts everywhere, but what looks like flatlands actually is full of trails, jump and berms for thousand of acres and are incredibly fun. The dry lake bed is a great place to test your speed.

Johnson Valley--very popular, very large and very soon probably gone, because the Marines are expanding. So check it out while you still can.

Jawbone Canyon--would NOT recommend for buggies. This is great for dirt bikes, but too tight and steep for buggies.

Big Bear--never done it, but a lot of guys swear by this area for summer rides, when the desert areas are pretty much closed out with 120 degree temps.

Glamis--this is really for the big boys. Your riding ability will be very limited, it is extremely crowded and rowdy. On the bright side...you might be able to take a dip in one of the Jacuzzis guys set up in their truck beds, there are strippers, and you can see those $100,000 sand rails strut their stuff----and man, can they strut!

There are tons of others.

& a great place to ride Buggys !!! May well have to come down your way one day (if I ever get off restriction, for hurt'n Jackster !!!).
We heard from him yesterday; he says he's doing well (as well as a guy confined to a wheelchair can be), & has been very busy purchasing a new lit'l farm... He says he's definitely gonna come back to the States again, & maybe if he gives enough notice; this time, maybe come down & ride Glamis or Ocotillo Wells w/Firebird & Geek

Yeah, those strippers can strut too.....

Big Bear and Johnson Valley are in Southern California. Northern California doesn't have the large riding areas we have down here. The Sierra Nevadas are supposed to be great for riding, but that's a late spring early summer thing, unless you like snow or thunderstorms.

Southern California is the top of the heap for offroading. You really have to see it to believe it. Starting right about now, literally hundreds of thousands of people are spending their weekends in our deserts, on every type of vehicle, in every type of terrain you can imagine. I Didn't even mention Dumont Dunes, Stoddard Wells/Lucerne Valley, Dove Springs, Buttercup, Gordon's Well, Truck Haven, Anzo-Borrego, countless more!!

Ocotillo Wells is over 80,000 ACRES!!!
ISDRA, which includes Glamis, is over 164,000 acres!!
EL MIrage 20,0000
Dove Springs 20,000

Once you get out of the major cities, you start seeing the trails going up the sides of random mountains. Here we ride and we ride everywhere we can. You and Jackster definitely should come down and see what all the fuss is about! Once you've seen Ocotillo Wells, you will start dreaming of sunny days and desert mesas!

firebird81; all these riding areas sound great !!! 8) in my dirt bike racing days (before having 5 sons), I was headed to So. Cal. a couple of times -- but plans got changed & never made it ...
You guys help me gather up some interest in this ride w/Jackster, --- we get him to come back to visit again, may well give me the incentive I would need to haul a bunch of buggys so far down south --- say maybe this time next year (as it'll be a while before he's gonna be ride ready).
