You could crawl the sand in low range but will not have much momentum to clear hills in stock form. Get the following so you can do some hills:

NGK Iridium spark plug
17g Dr Pulley variator sliders
Blue Polini torque spring
2" 2-stage UNI filter with K&N cover
138 main jet
3/8" fuel line and low restriction filter

Don't expect to do the same hills as ATVs since you are pushing much more weight than them with a smaller engine. On the other hand, you will feel much safer strapped in 4-point harnesses with a cage around you and a buddy.

I think you would be severely disappointed at Glamis if you wanted to go anywhere besides the washes. We are taking the GTR out there thanksgiving weekend, but I don't expect much....

My 150cc Yerf-Dog can make 15-20 ft dunes, I expect my 250cc Joyner to do the same or better next time I take it out on the sand. I have never been to Glamis, so I do not know the typical terrain. However at Moses Lake, WA we ran an almost stock GTR250 and modified 150cc buggies successfully. Check out the pictures of our trips at:

Glamis is soft sand and large dunes. They even laugh at Rhinos and RZRs out there. Altho, there are a ton of golf carts with the same power that our buggies have. They just stay in the washes and on the small dunes. In the world of sand sports, Glamis is Mecca and most of what you see out there are full-sized sand rails.
