Post subject:  Thinking about building my first buggy this winter.

Hi i have been looking around and have been playing with the idea of building a Street bike powered Buggy for a while. i just moved to Texes a few months ago and was told you can make them street legal here. Im curios if any one knows where i can find out what exactly has to be done to make them street legal. Also i have been looking around at Plans on the internet and i like the this one http://www.edge.au.com/buggies_piranha.htm Except i would want to make it to hold 2 people. I was thinking i could use that design and stretch it to have the passanger sit behind instead of side-x-side. if any one knows of any plans that are similer or that are for a large CC engine that are side-x-side i would appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks

I havnt bought them yet. I have heard in some states you have to have a solid axle on any 4 wheeled vehicle on the streets so im trying to find out if its like that in texes or not. I love the look of it and it looks like it should handle well. WHat ever i build i want it to be Street legal so im doing my homework before i start in on any thing.

C.A. I've been thinking the same thing, and like you I checked out the EDGE plans. Man I really like that Piranah, again like you I want a 2 seater. So I've found some on ubuildit.com. I emailed them and the buggy plans are for irs. The also sent me the dimensions 98x58 1/2x61. My problem is I'm not motor savy so finding a motor is proving to be a major task, with out coughing up some serious dollar bills. Unless I can find a more atractive cart that meet all my criteria, this looks to be the set of plans I'll get. Check it out!

What size buggy are you thinking of building? I'm trying to keep my width under 60" , and length around 8'. At 60" my joyner still fits in just about all the atv trails. All the above mentioned buggies seem to be quite nice. I think it boils down to how big or small, and what kind of riding you'll be doing. So far youv'e visited the same sites that I have, keep posting if you find more. Happy hunting.

When I was in New Zeland 2 yrs ago the Pirana was the first "buggy" i had ever seen. It was so nice and well put together, obviously credit to the builder, but they have a great set-up. I bought the plans from them for the IRS set-up. I hope to use them on my Dune in the near future. You should call and talk to them, they are great guys and will answer any questions you might have.

IM looking to have it around 7-8 feet and around 55-65 inches wide and im looking to place around a 800cc-1300cc engine in it (my friends tell me i have a death wish). I want to be able to make it Street legal and from what i have heard for most states 4-wheeled vehicles have to be over 50 inches in width. That and i want it to be able to handle decently on the street as well as on the trails so 65 is as far as im willing to go in width. I have only seen 1 version of the piranha on Youtube and it was completely enclosed so i couldnt tell how they have the frame built. It looks like they moved the gas tanks and have just one and put 2 seats in instead of 2 gas tanks.

ALso I have a friend who is looking to build one also so the odds are they will both be built at the same time. So when i do start this project the odds are i will be posting pics of both buggys, that is when we decide what we are gong to build.

Here is a clip of that 2 seat piranha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxIMzN46xvw
