Okay, that makes sense, but since it would already be open when the engine is off, how could it then be causing my problem?

well bottom line....I'm convinced your float needle is not sealing. If gas is continually running/leaking, then it has to be coming in past the needle valve. Question: how level is your engine?
I have seen this problem on a few models where the engine was tilted too far forward and the float couldn't come up enough to seal. What brand was the replacement carb?

Thats a darn good idea.If you changed the shocks with longer ones and have the extra link suspension it would tilt the engine back.

The carb isn't completely level, but it isn't tipped much at all either. Everything on the kart is stock, so I haven't changed the angle from what it was to start with. I'll have to check on the brand of the carb, but it looks identical to the original (which wasn't very old, BTW). The old carb has a cast-in name
"DE - then some kind of a star symbol - NI Standard of Japan"
There's a cast in number on the opposite side "PD24J", and a stamped in number "HA00S113". I'll look at the new carb and report back what it is.
I agree that if it's overflowing it makes sense that the needle and seat are not sealing, but I've taken both carbs apart multiple times, and adjusted the float to the point where it was starving the engine, and it still overflowed when the engine wasn't running. I know this sounds like one of those problems where the person asking the question (me!) isn't telling the whole story (I've been there, believe me), but this is exactly what's happening with this thing. I'll take a another look at the tilt of the carb and the float level. Does anyone have a suggestion on a float level that may work? If that is the problem, I seem to always be on one side of the sweet spot or the other.

i think the float level for that carb is 18.5mm if that carb has the long pilot jet.
also this is just a thought is your gas cap vent working ok,maybe its not venting wright letting tank build up pressure and gas forcing the float open.i know i can fill my tank full and if it sets in the hot sun a little while gas will start to come out my vent.sounds crazy but just a thought.
hope you get your problem solved that sounds frustrating

Another good idea,I've seen my gas gurgleling out my clear vent hose when it gets hot.

Gas coming out on a hot summer day... Sounds like skunk beer to me. Oh... you were talking about the buggy not the buggy driver... Gotcha...

Seriously, with the carb off the buggy, what I've done is hook up the gas lines and see if fuel still flows through the same port.... If it does it has nothing to do with the rest of the buggy.

We had a very similar problem when we were jumping our buggies out at EMR. My son's buggy had gas pouring, and I mean pouring, out all over his hot engine.

We installed a shut-off valve the next day and still had to fix the carb.

We took it all apart and put it back together several times. We found that the float would stick if the carb was placed in a certain position during the installation. We took it back apart and made sure that the float moved freely in just about any position. It took a while, but we eventually got it.

If I hadn't met you Teamhog I wouldve taken that the wrong way.lol
If you still its a float problem take the the carb off and conect the the top half of the carb to the fuel line ,let the floats dangle turn gas on, gas should come out, be careful about losing the needle lift the float up the gas should stop.

Okay, I finally had a little time to check some things out. The choke is working fine. I lowered the float level a couple times, ending up with it so low I don't think it would run right, and it still overflowed. I even bench tested it and it worked okay, but then put it on the kart and it overflowed again!
I didn't read the last two replies until just now, but Teamhog might be on to something. One thing I haven't checked is to make sure the float can move through it's travel in any position without interference. I'll check that tonight hopefully. In the meantime, any other ideas?
Thanks to everyone that has helped me with this.

ps - Are there any other carbs that would work in this application that might be better than this one? I used to race sprint karts, and I used Tillitson carbs, which always worked great. Anything like that for these, or should I keep trying to make this one work?

What brand is the carb? KF? DENI?

Both of them Deni?
The DENI PD24J is usually a pretty good carb.

The original is for sure, as it's sitting on my desk next to me right now. The other I'll have to check, but it is identical to this one, so unless another brand is an exact duplicate of the Deni, then it is a Deni for sure.

Well, I got busy with other things and haven't worked on this problem since that last post. I'm hoping to get back to it soon, and will report back what I find. I hope you do the same.

What kind of things have you done to try and make the original carb work? Anything I haven't listed in this thread?

Braverance.....I have soaked and cleaned it thoroughly......checked the intake for leaks .......put a new intake manifold on.....changed jets to accomodate new k&n airfilter and new exhaust........cleaned the float bowl and made sure it floats and that the needle seats...checked choke for voltage and movement of the needle.....pretty much everything anyone had wrong with their carbs i tried.....Mind you the buggy rips at high rpms but when she's run for over 45 mins at low speeds she bogs down unless u keep the rpms up. When it stops is when the carb leaks fuel if the petcock is left open.......

That's how it happens with mine the first time it does it. After that, it happens sooner. Sounds like we pretty much have the same problem.
Is your carb horizontal or angled when installed? Since the kart is not always level, I don't think that should matter much, but I wonder if it makes the float level adjustment more critical. Nothing about this problem makes any sense to me, especially when I put a brand new carb on and it did the same thing immediately. I'll be curious to see how it goes with your new carb.

studio5o i was looking back through the posts and i see you are still having problems.when your problem starts to happen have you tried loosening up the gas tank cap to see if it will help.
