welcome to buggynews. It sounds like the wire for the starter relay is hooked to a constant hot wire.

It sounds as if you don't really have the right wiring sequence...it would be safer and may save some burnt wires to replace/charge battery.. then test wires with multi meter/test light to find hot. from that point one wire should be ignition and one activate starter... if one wire does both they are connected/shorted together. (you may also have another wire running any accesories..light etc) A wiring diagram would help.. (i know there is one on here but don't know where) Once you find which wire activates starter it should be easy to tell which is ignition.... When you find ignition...if "no spark" condition persists then you start trcking other componats ( start with grounds they should all be green.. 90% of all electrical problems in DC are grounds) hope this helps -Pat

yep sounds like you have some wires wrong like you have solenoid hot wire hook to on position and ground hook to start postion,THATS a guess because solenoid can be activated by ground or a hot wire
buggy could have a ac cdi or a dc cdi
little more info would help is it a 3 wire switch, maybe post a picture of buggy
becareful jumping from car don't hurt to borrow just the battery power but not good if car is running with alternator putting out also you could burn something up

I had the same problem with the starter on mine, it was the solenoid that was bad, it was stuck in the "ON" position. I'm starting a new thread but maybe someone reading this can tell me how you know if your CDI is AC nor DC? The difference at buyatvpartsonline.com for mine is $10. I'm assuming mine is DC since it has a battery and doesn't run of just the alternator windings.

CH47- make sure the connections are the same- (i'm sure there are other ways but when I replaced mine it seems wire count and connections were different so i made sure I could clearly see the conection.)
As you may know even AC CDI's run off battery- In fact you go back a long ways to find DC only charging systems.. AC converted to DC is more efficient.

Pud on ground activated solinoid wouldn't the whole ignition switch just be a ground? - Pat

theres different ways you can wire one of these, these are in rubbber.
on mine it takes ground to activate it. i'm wired 12volt dc in one side of solenoid and 12 volt comes out other side.12 volt coming out goes up to my key switch and placed on start side of switch.i have a AC cdi and a 3 wire switch .one ground coming from back at engine than one on run postion its goes back to cdi than my hot wire from solenoid
for me its just one two three
when i go to run postion cdi gets its ground ,go to start ground touch's hot wire, solenoid activated switch fall back to run keeping ground to cdi

i don't have dc cdi but it could be ground on start position of switch
ground in and out of solenoid than going up to switch
when this switch is turn on you would have 12 volt to power cdi in run postion, than when hot goes over and touch's start postion ground, solenoid activated, falls back to run keeping 12 volt to cdi.

i saw he done found his problem but done wrote it :)

the dc buggys will have only one wire plugged into the two wire plug on the cdi
