Post subject:  FNG - Howhit Engine - No spark - Replaced Everything - HELP!

First of all, hello. Great site. I have a Yerf Dog Spiderbox 150cc.

Replaced harness, cdi, performance coil, solenoid, plug and everything checks out within tolerance from cdi pickup wire to compression but I am still getting no spark.

Over the weekend I rerouted and cleaned all ground wires - had a spark. Put new carb on........suddenly no spark. WTF??

I have never had such problems with a simple engine. All help greatly appreciated.

Have you downloaded the service manual from this forum? You may have a questionable stator or flywheel pickup causing you trouble.

How could my pickup or flywheel be questionable when the values are well within the ranges according to buggy depot's "no spark" troubleshoot?

Any way to convert these carts to a more simple ignition system? This sucks!

The valves control intake and exhaust flow out of the cylinder for combustion - They have nothing to do with spark, but can make for hard starting or running if off.

The pickup senses the magnet on the flywheel and send the signal to the CDI to control spark firing timing.

The stator has a dedicated coil for CDI power that is via a second bullet connector off the stator/pickup wire bundle.

Since you measured out the pickup coil, you will need to trace your ground wires for the stator, CDI and coil. Make sure you not grounding Your CDI kill signal or you will not get spark.

All grounds are correct. What is the likelyhood of a CDI going bad? Althought my CDI is relatively new, it did sit for a while and we also cranked on it a bunch last fall. I thought that they were fairly bulletproof......maybe I'm wrong??

That would be the only thing that's not TWO WEEKS OLD or less.

Cart turns over like a champ - just no sparky.

I'm just jumping the solenoid to try and get a spark. Switches are totally out of the wiring. I should get SOMETHING //!!???

How much a/c voltage are you getting from the Stator? Also have you pulled it off to see if you have a wire grounding or broken. Also check to see if it is clean and free of oil or corrosion. Also how is the CDI wired pin1? pin2? etc. I have had this problem before and it was oil on the stator. Hope it helps.

can jump the solenoid all day long, if you don't have the ign wire hot, it won't start... do what chuck says - check and/or bypass your ignition cylinder so as to give power to your ign circuit.

Ok:

stator - 82vac
trigger - 1.2vac
cdi - 36vac
coil - .6 ohms

What am I misreading? Thanks in advance.

I forgot but do you have power coming the ignition switch to the cdi

If you mean the on/off toggle on the steering column - yes.

The Yerf controls are very simple:

1. Kill from the CDI gets grounded if you want to stop the engine (green rocker switch)
2. Solenoid control line gets grounded if you want to activate the starter (red push button with brake switch interlock)

Did you use this link to verify your CDI connections?
http://www.buggydepot.com/buggy-tech-ce ... odels.html

1. Ground to pickup coil to CDI pin 1
2. Ground to coil to CDI pin 2
3. Ground to CDI pin 4
4. Open on CDI pin 5 unless killing engine
5. Ground to stator to CDI pin 6

I think we're miscommunicating here on what you are doing (talking to original poster).

If I go out to my carts right now, with the switch in the off position, and jump the starter solenoid, it will NOT start. The ignition switch when placed in the RUN position puts 12V battery on the ignition circuit to the CDI. It will not even try to fire without this. I have a Crossfire, not a Yerf, or I would tell you which wires to connect at the ignition switch to get the 12V to the ignition circuit.

I have the engine running permanently "on". No switches involved at all.

Every wire is correct according to BD diagram (a/c CDI). I re-grounded EVERYTING and then I was getting great spark last weekend. We thought bad compression so we check it - 138psi - ok. While we were at it we checked valves - .004 - ok.

Put it back together....................NOW NO SPARK.........???

Weird...............Do you think there is any possible way that the stator went bad during all of this?

You showed a small AC voltage coming from the stator, so the trigger should be working. That leaves CDI, Coil, Wire, and spark plug. I know the coils can get primary to secondary shorts that still have resistance. Also, the coil/wire combo can separate at the end with the spark plug - I've actually had that happen to me.

Also, how far apart did you take it? Any cam/timing work? I have put an aftermarket cam in 180 out before.....

Only took apart enough to check value clearance. Guess I could put the older coil/wire back on and see if the 1 week old high performance one was bad from the start..........??

Would you guys believe that I think I got sent a bad coil from BD?

Put the old one back on and the dang thing started right up.

Okay, simple question...
There's a ground wire that gets connected on or near the CVT Cover on the drivers side at the front of the engine. If this wire gets attached to the wrong spot it won't start. Check it out and let us know. Do me a favor and take some pictures and post them up here. We can guide you better with some pictures.

OK............She ran great for a week. Switched to UNI filter and upgraded CDI. Ran even better.

Let it sit for a while......................NO SPARK...........

Put the old stuff (that also worked) back on....NO SPARK......

NEW coil.............NO SPARK

Can a CDI go bad taht quickly?? We were just running around the yard.

Weak battery??

HELP - this is driving me crazy. We did nothing but took a break.
