Can anyone tell me what would happpen if the CDI were bad. I have a new gas tank, gas line, gas filter, elec choke and a re-built carb. It will start and idle fine but when I touch the gas pedal it dies. The only thing I can think to do nest is replace the CDI.

I doubt a bad CDI will cause that.

1. What type of air filter are you running?
2. The original air boxes used to crack at the hose connection to the box.
3. If you run a UNI filter, you must have an intake runner between the filter and carburetor.
4. Did you check for leaks in the intake manifold between the carburetor and head?
5. What is your jetting? Have you replaced any of the jets?
6. How did you rebuild the carburetor?
7. Have you adjusted the valves?

Thanks for replying.
I will check the air filter tonight.
I have seen some small cracks in the intake manifold but nothing that appeared be more than exterior weathering.
I purchased a carburetor re-build kit from BMI Karts and took it to a small engine repair shop to have it soaked and re-built.
I have not adjusted the valves.
If I remove the filter just to test the motor, will that rule out the air filter?

Check your spark plug also... and make sure the gap is correct.

1. if you spray carburetor cleaner around the intake joints while the buggy is idling and the engine dies or revs up, you have an intake leak that needs to be addressed

2. Without knowing the competency of your local engine shop, I suggest tearing it apart and blowing carburetor cleaner through each passage to ensure it is clean. What jets did BMI send you? Are they the same size as your original ones?

3. Adjusting the valves is regular maintenance on these engines since they do not use hydraulic lifters - I adjust mine twice a year.

4. Removing your air filter will just unbalance your air/fuel mixture and cause additional troubleshooting.

Possible coil failure. Just happened to me.

Start up and idle fine, even at 1/4 throttle. Any more than that, and it would break up, cough, sputter, pop out exhaust, etc.....

Tried another coil and ran great.

Oh, and the coil that failed was a cheap "performance" coil off Ebay. I think it had less than 3 hours of run time on it.

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's good......

Before you go tearing into everything, take the filter off the back of the carb and make sure your slide isnt stuck in the up posistion. Ive had this happen and it done the exact same thing. If it is, take it out and clean it real good.
