Well, I got her out last Sunday at Busco Beach, and all in all I was very pleased. I was going to meet Bandit1100, and I did, but I was a little late, and he had bent his axle so he actually left when I got there. Great guy though, he bent his axle like almost 3 hrs before I got there, and he waited just to meet me and tell me he was leaving. Thanks for waiting, I really appreciated it.

Anyhow, scott275 did a review recently on his STX 400, and everything he said was spot on with mine. Takes forever to warm up, then runs great. 1st is really low, but that doesn't bother me because I like hill climbs, so I won't just repeat his post. I rode for about 3 hrs, and it ran great but I did have 3 minor problems.

1. I broke off the front fenders, didn't even hit anything. I was a little disappointed, but not a huge deal. They are mounted via this really thin sheet metal tab that supports the whole fender. Once I got a little mud on them, the weight just started bending the tabs and they both broke off before the end of the day. I'll just replace that tab with a heavier gauge tab and it should be fine.

2. The carb fell off. Yeah, it literally fell off from the boot on the engine side. This happened to me 3 times, at first I thought the hose clamp was just loose, so I tightened back, and drove on. This happened two more times. I'm not sure why this was happening, the boot looked correct, and the hose clamp was tightening down. I'm just glad it happened to me there on hardpack dirt instead of in sand. I think I can rig up something with some cable ties to secure it in place and that should hold it.

3. My rear brakes started squeaking. By the end of the day I was getting a squeaking, and tonight I got a chance to really inspect it and I pinned it to both rear brakes. I took the calipers off the rear, and confirmed that without them it won't squeak. This one I'm stumped on what to do. The brakes aren't excessively worn, they were clean, I'm not sure what was causing this. The rotors didn't look warped, but that's my only guess. Its like at one specific point on each brake disc when it passes through the caliper I get a squeak. Thoughts, comments suggestions for this????

All in all though I am very pleased with the machine. I drove it off the trailer, drove for 3 hrs, and then drove it back on the trailer under its own power. In my book that's a good day. Its very easy to drive, my wife enjoyed driving it. Runs like a champ, I felt no difference with one person or two in it. It climbed everything I pointed it at. I never found any really big hills, but there was several small steep ones. I never felt underpowered. The locked rearend did great. I was trying to avoid the mud, but my wife took it right through the middle of some really sloppy stuff and it pulled right through.

I got the program car performance for the android and did a couple runs with it, here's my best times:

60' 3.055 sec @ 12.3mph
330' 7.165 sec @ 36.35mph
1/8mi 11.112 sec @ 43.62mph

No clue how this compares to other buggies, but if you got an android phone get that program, and let us know your times.

BigE sells a carb bracket to hold the carb in place. You'd have to contact him to find out if it'll fit your buggy.
As for the brakes, try a little brake lube on the piston side of the pad. You can get tiny tubes of the lube at any auto parts store.

check the inside of the intake to make sure its not oily, if a drop of any kind of oily substance gets in there the intake wont tighteh down. the calipers are a floating design like a car, like was said try a little caliper lube

Got the brakes to stop squeaking, thanks for the advice. Haven't gotten to the carb yet, maybe this weekend.

Nice to have met you as well Eric, it's no big. I just took a nap in the truck for a while. :lol: Too bad I couldn't do any more riding though, would like to have followed that 400. Glad you enjoyed riding, what did you think of Busco as a first time rider there?

I liked it. My only minor complaint was some of the trails were too narrow for me, but it was a lot of fun. Different from what I'm used to in tn, very easy to navigate and huge open areas.

How long until you get something running? I want to see a 300ex yerf. I bet that'll be a mean buggy. I'm only going to be here another month or so, hope we can yet out and ride before I leave.

throw away the hose type clamp
that came on the carb
replace with one for radiator
with slot and hex head combined
clean carb & inside of intake
tighten with screw head then a little more
with socket

An old trick we used to use to keep handlebar grips from slipping was to rub the inside of the grip with a little gas right before we slipped them on. Being wet they would slip on easy, and the the rubber on the inside of the grip would get tacky and grip the handlebar better.

The Yerf should be back on the trail late next week or first part of the week after, I'm sending in the bent axle today via UPS.
The POS 300.....? Maybe next year?

Well, maybe in a few weeks we can get together again. Anyone in our neighborhood planning to ride over labor day. I think I'll have the weekend through tuesday the 7th off.

That's why I like the Yerfs, I can get down just about any trail a quad can go (provided it doesn't have to float :roll: ).

how'd you do this ?

because my front are screamers and it get annoying some times :D i usually blame it on the dust but if there is something to make them better that would be great

Took them off, cleaned (just wiped) off all the dirt (they weren't bad) and put caliper greese on all the moving parts. I think it was the piston, but I got it lubed real good as well as the pins. Just go to auto zone or advanced and get the little pack of brake greese. Its usually on the counter with the spark plug lube in a little like one use pack.

I'll be off Thursday due to today being my regular day off and today being a holiday. My replacement axle hasn't come in yet (called Travis Friday, should have shipped Fri or maybe tomorrow. He said they dropped the ball on this one.), but I can ride my quad.

Well, I got out to turkey bay on Monday. I figured if I missed the big ride I needed to get out somewhere.

All I can say is that I'm even more impressed with this buggy now. It went up every hill I pointed it at. The only thing I didn't make it over was buttpucker or surprise hill (same hill, just different names for it). I got to the top no problem but kept getting high centered in the ruts. Other than that I got up everything I tried. It went up all sides of rocky top, even did some rock crawling, more like rock bouncing, but she just kept going.

It has held up very well, but I did break a couple minor things. The factory tires kept getting cut by rocks. That took several plugs, and when I got home another tire had gone flat on the trailer. I'm going to tube them all and put slime in them. The other break was I blew out a shock. I actually did that the night before, I jumped it over a ditch and the left rear blew out. I drove it anyway like that and couldn't tell any difference in the ride, it just squeaked on the bumps. She's not a jumper, but I really love this machine more every time I run it.
