to me that sounds more then a tick ,more like a knock. almost like it would be a rod bearing. how does it run? sound will travel but i don't think it would be a exhaust leak pud

joe i listen to it again unless i'm missing something that noise sounds inside of the engine.like the rod that piston is on is loose on the crank trying to flop up and down as the piston goes up and back. thats just my thoughts. here is something you can try to help you pin point where it is coming from.maybe take the fan shroud off back at fan.i think you would have enough room but becareful and take a piece of 1/2inch plastic water line pipe.make it long enough to were your head is not close to fly wheel and fan then start your engine and let it idle put the piece of pipe around were cylinder meets the the engine block then put your ear up to pipe.that should let you hear what is going on inside the the engine. see if the noise is coming from that area just becareful of the fan and flywheel. thats all i can think of to help you pin point the noise.

ok i'm back again and just saw that this topic has been brought up before.did you look into checking the flywheel and starter clutch that the others recommended, for eliminating those as possible problems maybe i'm off here
i did take of the fan to see if there was something behind it but i did not take of the flywheel if i take off the flywheel do i have to change timing or anything would it be easy to put back on
the flywheel should b keyed.Timing will not change unles you put an offset key in.oops that should be diff post.

also go to service manual mini buggy section of forum and download one of the gy6 service manuals, the carter talon will work. handy to have, there is a section in it on the starter clutch check it out. remember that nut to get the (starter clutch) off is left hand thread. flywheel nut is not.
