How do I test the electric choke when it is not attached to the carb? There is the one plastic clip with two wires that clips to another clip iin the plastic electrical box and then there is another single wire that goes to a single wire in the electrical box, and then there's another wire that hooks to a temperature switch near the top of the cylinder head. Do I have to connect the two single wires together and then put power to the two leads in the plastic clip?

I bought a spare carb ($35 shipped) off of eBay complete with e-choke and I'd like to see if I can fabricate a manual choke. I need to get that needle extended to see how far it extends to help with this modification.

if the electric choke is the same as the one for the 150's the plunger has to extend about 3-4mm... I was just in a thread where they showed how to do the mod, once I find it I'll post a link.

found it... someone-explain-auto-chokes-to-me-t32403.html

Thanks T3, but does anyone know how to test it off the carb?

My plan is to use a manual spring loaded choke...ordered one for an old ATC250!

should be able to pull it out and turn the switch to run position and see if the needle comes out
12 volt power is what runs your

Ok what about when its totally off the carb? Remember I have a spare carb/e choke. I want to test that one.

you could just hook it to a battery one side to positive other to negative
not sure if the needle length numbers would be the same but here is how they check them on a 150
some 150's gets it power from stator with a resistor hooked into ground, mine did get it power from stator
than theres other 150 gets 12 volt like yours

I'm still not sure what to do with the other two stray wires. I would think they need to be used even in the testing of the auto bystarter.

Can you guys help me understand the particular autobystarter on my Hammerhead GTS 250? This is driving me insane. It doesn't just have 2 wires coming from the autibystarter like a typical one, it also has one single wire that connects to a coolant temperature switch near the top of the motor. And then it has another single wire that connects to a wire in the electrical box...same place the plastic connector from the autobystarter connects. If I unplug that single wire in the electrical box, the temperature warning buzzer buzzes and the yellow temp light will turns on. See pic below. Before I start trying to convert to a manual enrichener, I'd like to fully understand how this thing works so I'm not just unplugging stuff. It does not extend if you pull it off the carb and turn the ignition on, with or without the buggy running...the single wires to the switch and under the electrical box have something to do with it turning on at a certain temp. I can get it to work manually by connecting the single wires together and then putting power to the two wires in the plastic housing.

the yellow wire is the Batt feed from the stator that feeds power to the choke when the buggy runs and one of the greens is the ground for the choke. at least it was on my 2009 HH 250GT. i hooked positive batt to the yellow and ground to the green. i waited i think 3 minutes and it was full length. the second green wire in the plastic connector is the other end to the temp sensor wire.

I separated the temp sensor wire from that three wire harness. Bought new connectors from Radio Shack for the electric choke.

BigE I've checked that manual and the schematics from my manual...could not make any sense out of the e choke operation.

RMaxey/BigE, do you guys think that little temp switch tells the e choke to turn on at a certain temp or is that just for the high temp alarm?

RMaxey, thanks man, the part about the stator was a piece of the puzzle I was missing.

The e-choke is not operated by engine temps. Once juice is applied to it, it will extend within a few minutes. Has nothing to do with the temp sensor.

There's no polarity to the e-choke. Just apply 12v to it and you should be able to bench test it.

And yes, the temp sensor is only an alarm for when it reaches a certain temperature.

Ok, I just finished testing the one that is on the buggy and it's working. Get's hot after about 1 minute. Weird thing is it does not get hot when it's hooked up and the buggy is on...running or not.

Looking at the green ground wire that is connected to the choke, can you guys tell me what side of the plastic clip it leads to (the one with the indent or without the indent)? The answer might solve the issue. I just tested the OHMs and my ground wire is on the indented side of the connector which I'm pretty sure is incorrect.

Here's my thought, I think the wires in the plastic housing are reversed....positive is in negative slot and negative is in positive slot. I'm going to see if I can figure that out from pictures. The e-choke has never worked properly.

I've been told there is no polarity to the e-choke. It will function hooked up either way.

The enrichment choke is just a heating element coil. It does not have a polarity.

Thanks Sock & PGH....then I'm baffled at this point. I have an e-choke that tests out fine off the buggy (ohms are good and gets hot)......I just tested the electrical connections from under the plastic electrical box that the choke hooks into and I'm getting 13.8 volts while the buggy is running, but only when I connect the black/neg connector of the voltmeter to the yellow wire and the red/positive wire of the voltmeter to one of the prongs of the plastic male connector...not sure if pos or neg prong, but not sure it matters from what you guys are saying.

I'm just not sure why the e-choke doesn't want to heat up when on the running buggy. Can't get the spare e-choke I bought to work while hooked to the buggy either. Bummed and confused.

Just for sh!ts & giggles I reversed the wires in the plastic connector on the e-choke and all that did was sound the high temp alarm once the buggy was started. E-choke did not heat up.

Thanks PGH, I am printing it now and will take a closer look. I do understand it which is good!

I realized that HH replaced my carb under warranty when the buggy was new, I wonder if that has something to do with this confusion.

You guys are so helpful...I really appreciate this forum. Thanks for being patient with me.
