Hi Mike,

If your contemplating an engine swap, Super Karts has adapter plates they provide with the Geo engines they sell to install in the 800 chassis. As far as the transmission bolting up, I do not know, but I'll bet Sean has looked into this and may have an answer. I know that many of the transmissions will swap between the Geo and Suzuki engines.

So far my experience has been hit and miss on finding compatable parts. I will remove the head in the near future for porting and decking and will have a better idea regarding the valve train etc. The head has a shape similar to the 1L Chevy Sprint from 1985-88. Bore and stroke are different, though.

One of my bigger worries besides axles, is the clutch. When I finally get the lower ratio Chinese tranny, I'll want to upgrade the clutch. I have no idea what will fit.

If anyone is thinking about installing a $3000.00 turbo kit, I would advise spending the same money and getting a complete 1000cc Geo engine and drive train from Super Karts. I have no idea regarding availability but I recall a post that the dollars would be similar.

This Chinese stuff is begining to get more than frustrating. From the lack of parts availability, to the low quality of the key components and the constant little things that are f'en up. Heck, if you just review the posts from Socrates, Laymanson and myself it should be enough to convince you to go screaming into the night. Man, and I thought keeping 40 year old cars and bikes running was challenging. This is starting to make 50's and 60's British bikes look reliable. Was Lucas Chinese?

Rant over.....I did find that the oil filter from a 1989 Suzuki Swift will fit. The one Soc used is from an 89 Toyota Corolla, Celica.

Swift part # Fram PH4386

Later...I got to go fix, my seat, steering wheel, alt. bracket, shocks, wheel bearings, CV joints, exhaust system, timing, lighting, cooling system, wheel hub and swap the transmission. Other than that...I'm good to go.

I took a look at my CV's. There doesn't appear to be any play when I twist the drive shaft but there is a bit of play up and down, side-to-side. It is a definate weak point and will break sooner or later.

Sean,
I am interested in Super Karts kit. Count me in and keep us apprised of your progress.

Thanks

Well here is what I have found so far.

Thunder claims to carry a full line of parts for the 800cc engine and transmission--they are not sure the axle and CV are the same length so they do not know if they will swap. They told me to measure it and call them, they have them in stock. Even if they do, I believe we will continue to have these problems.

SuperKart will do a Custom Porsche 930 flange for us, but looking at my transmission, I do not see an area for the Flange to attach to. Ours looks completely different than the picture he showed us??? I will try to post a picture of our set up to see if it will work for Sean--I assume he knows what he's talking about since he has done some upgrades, I just could not get it straight in my head from his photos.

I believe hoodlum is correct in his diagnosis, I think it is the plunge that is killing us. With such short axles and high travel, I just do not think the [edit--Chinese CV] can handle it.

I am not familiar enough with the 930 set up or the plunging U-joint to know which is better suited for our needs. When I have them completely out of my buggy, I will post some pics of the Tranny set up and the CV damage so that we can put our heads together to sove the problem.

I am beginning to agree with Mick, once it is up and running I am seriously considering giving it back to my wife. It will probably last her for ever, and I will go back to my Polaris. I just want to push it, and I do not think it is designed to be pushed hard.

Of course I am just frustrated, I have been planning the Rally for months and now I wont be able to attend. And The CV's are Pissing me off. I may change my mind again once it is fixed. It is just So Cool to drive!!

Back to the garage

[EDIT]

I just reread this post and realized there might be some confusion.

Sean, my question to you is this, is my transmission the same as the one you have-and can you still create the 930 CV for mine. If so I would like to get them sent off to you.

Ok...here come the pictures.

I am uploading pictures of the axle, CV, Bearings, and the connection point for Seans 930 modification. Hopefully Sean can tell by these pictures if it will work.

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

I can't believe that thing came apart like that, wait, yes I can. That truly sucks. Hopefully someone can make a solid reasonably priced raplacement. It is just a matter of time before I am in the same boat. Best of luck.

Dude...that's messed up!! When you said your CV was bad, I had no idea the the joint housing was blowed up. I hope the Thunder axles will work, as you can get them quickly and get up and running.

You are right regarding any 930 flange adapter. There is not enough room to clear the transmission case. The picture of the stub axle and seal says it all. As a reference the overall seal diameter is 72mm or 2.83". Not much room for a large diameter flange. I don't know if the 911's will even clear.

Stay strong, bro. It supossed to be fun and relaxing. Are you having fun yet?

Regards,
Mick

Post subject:  Super-Kart 800cc Porsche CV mode

The 800cc tranmission has a left and right splined output shaft. We can make a CV flange that will fit the splined output shaft. The center of the 930 CV flange has to be broached to match the spline of the output shaft of the tranmission. The wheel side of the 800cc has a CV with a spline. We have to make a CV flange that is thick enough to get it away from the wheel so we can make it large enough so we can use a 930 CV joint. After this is done that we simply order the right length CV shaft so we can connect the transmission 930 CV flange and the wheel 930 CV flange. It is not rocket science, just good common sense engineering. The new 800cc from Joyner will also brak CV becuase this item was never engineered. John Burns should know better but I could be wrong. China is is all about what is cheapest and not what is best. They are capable of doing it right but they must be told what to do. Personally I think it is a waste of time replacing the broken CV on any 250cc, 650cc or 800cc with the same under engineered part but again it is sometime the only choice. I think it is better to engineer it corectly before it is ever sold to the public so problems like this never happen. Our SK-2 Off-Road has the same trailing arms except ours are reinforced compared to the 800cc sold by Motous, Awesome Buggy or Roketa (Goldenvale). Our old factory in Shanghai built of of these sandrails for Jinfeng. I am not in the business of fixing the competition sandrails. We are a custom sandrail and sandrail parts manufacturer so I can fix most of the problems I read about on BN.

Are you looking to buy? Do you already have the Roketa?

Mike,
I have posted everything under laymansm cheetah mods in the mod section of the forum. nothing on the carb yet, want to check the the mixture to see if I am running lean or not first.

The Desert Kart tunable muffler has given a wide range of performance depending upon the discs that are added or subtracted. Performance in torque comes with a price in top end. But, you can find a happy medium and adjust when riding conditions require it. I have also added the K&N filter. Have not had the chance to get it out and test it since the mods because of CV problems.

I am currently replacing my CV joints and looking for a long term solution to this problem. I think Sean at super Karts is going to custom make some for me from VW CV's. My next upgrade would be the lower geared transmission.

I am looking in to a buggy The only place that sells 800's in my area is a roketa dealer. I would like to go with a super kart with the geo motor but I dont know if I can swing it or better yet one of the long travel buggies they are coming out with  . but yeah whatever I get will need to take a beating and bite back my budget tops out at about 8000 so a geo kart may be a possiblility I just dont have the time to drive all the way down to SoCal from oregon I would like to go somewhere to drive one before I decide to buy.
