Post subject:  In Need of Your Knowledge to Upgrade my 125cc Dirt Bike
Now on my second full year of my buggy search I couldn't hold out on buying a 'new' toy. Found a 1984 Yamaha xt250 dirt bike locally which I picked up for $170. I was of course told it was running last week but quit and he figures a carb clean is needed...Sure I'll buy it.

After ripping off the carb and seeing the inside of the gas tank [-X I knew I was given a little more than just an exaggeration. RUST RUST RUST RUST. After 3 days of a couple friends and I soaking, scraping, shaking, etc we got everything relatively clean. We got it running and I had it out on the trails all of Saturday. No power at all! Might have been low compression. (only crashed the bike once!)


Then a week later traded it straight up to a guy in town for this!
2007 Baja (I know it's no Yamaha) 125cc (downsize so I didn't kill myself). A lot lighter, and in better shape. Just needed front tube.

Thinking I'm going to keep this one for awhile so looking to do some minor mods.
A friend of mine just bought a 4 pack of pod filters and he only needs 3. So I plan on taking out the stock air box and custom fitting one of these on it.
Will this increase the air intake enough that I should rejet the carb?
Any other suggestions on improving performance on these 125cc engines would be appreciated!

should be standard mods...jets - air box..- probably the sprockets as well wold make a big diference..

I have quite a few parts for this bike if you need anything. I have 2 Baja dirt bikes (SSR 200 and a DR150). I bought 2 DR125 bikes for parts as everything except the engine is the same on the DR125 and DR150). I stripped them both down and packed everything away. I have brakes, body parts, forks, spare 125 engine, etc.

Also PM me if you need other parts sources. In spite of all the bad press I like the Baja machines. I have several sources for parts I don't have and cross references for other parts that fit. The buggy and first two bikes in this pic are all Baja and the ATV in the second pic is a Baja

Ok great thanks, rblakely: have you done any mods to the bikes at all? And the bike was not running strong when I first got it, until I realized choke is up lol. :whack Nice fleet of toys you have there! 8)

Sure runs a lot better with the choke off!
Just waiting on a front tire tube right now then going to hit the trails this weekend.

But so far I have been quite impressed with its performance. Didn't have high expectations after a lot of the research I had done into them, but seemed pretty peppy when I took it around the parking lot. Looking forward to really opening it up this weekend!

No aftermarket mods (but a few repairs). The 150 has plenty of power for my son (16 and 140lbs). It will do 60mph on a flat out run. I did pull the airbox off to see how it would run with a UNI. I really didn't notice any difference and it looked "funny" so I put the airbox back on. I also have never had to rejet the bikes like I do the buggy when I change altitude. They run as good at 2000' feet as they do at 200'. Couple of points when you take your first trail ride:

1. Clean the air filter after every ride. It has the removable sponge element and is easy to clean.

2. Tighten everything before you leave and check it when you get back. I was on our 3rd trip before things stopped working loose. Using a little thread lock on the exhaust mounting points will save you headaches down the road.

3. Go easy on jumps. My son bent 2 rims before I got him to keep the tires a little closer to the ground. The stock rims are not too beefy.
