I am considering buying a Polaris RZR but I want to find a few things out first. The RZR is 50" wide in Washington State how is it titled is it considered an ATV? I have been looking through the WA State web site but can't find what I am looking for. I have a riding area near me designated for motorcyle and ATV use I know some of the trails are wide enough for the RZR but I am not sure it is legal to use there.
I am thinking of buying a new RZR but may not if I can't ride it on the trails there. I don't want a quad. My 800 China buggy is too big for the trails. I have a lot of logging roads available but they are not as much fun as the trails. This riding area is called Jones Creek is only about 20 minutes from the house so I would get a lot of riding time compared to waiting for time to travel to the dunes plus I could still use it at the dunes and I may just keep the China buggy as well. I don't know about WA laws but I do know most states and most private riding areas with a 50" restriction do allow Rzrs. A few have a "straddle" requirement in their rules & are sticking to this definition, even though the Rzr meets all the other requirements. I understand it's pretty rare and kinda hard to justify it.
Best thing would be to call these spots and ask if they are permitting the Rzrs to use the facility. If they don't--ask why. If they have a straddle requirement ask them why you can't ride an inherently safer machine there instead? I once called a large atv park after I heard they didn't allow buggies. After speaking with them I realized they didn't understand our little buggies--they had problems with full size dune buggies & sand rails in the past so made ALL buggies illegal. After the conversation they allowed our small buggies. Small-engine buggies & UTVs are still pretty new and often the people making the rules just don't have the facts. Set 'em straight

In WA, once you have an ORV registration, you can ride buggies and UTVs on any trails marked for ATVs as long as you fit through the access poles limiting width on some trails. Obviously, any trails marked for 2-wheel traffic are restricted from our use.

Thanks for the info guys. I sent an email to one of the local riding clubs and was told the RZR with the 50" width is ok at Jones Creek actually up to 52" was ok.
The RZR is the only one that would meet that requirement for a UTV there might be some one seat China buggies also. This is a really nice riding area so I will really be considering a RZR now. I would like to get the RZR-S but it looks like this has limited my choice. Mike

Just took my new RZR (50") on it's maiden voyage last night. You won't be disapointed. In NY ATV's have to weigh less than 1,000 lbs. I don't know what Polaris was thinking with the RZR-S. It's weight is exactly 1,000 lbs, or one pound to much. Maybe they just didn't know?? Or care??
