Something like this :

http://www.autoanything.com/truck-tents ... -57-series

While I save up for toyhauler (or RV)... I just got to get something temporary so I can go overnight / weekend trips / rides.

Thoughts? Anyone ever use one of these ?

Thanks

i have one of those. mine is the sportz tent III
i love it!! they are really easy to set up and i can stand up in the middle of it once it's up and i'm 6' tall. i used mine at the 2011 bash and it worked out perfect. the ONLY drawback to these is if you have to make a quick run for something and it's your only transportation you need to unhook the straps and slide if off the back. not a huge deal though. i have been in mine in a pretty bad storm and stayed perfecly dry....even though the sides of the tent were caving in from the high winds......butt pucker moment right there.
:D

all in all....i would definitely recommend one.
got mine new off e-bay for $150 shipped.

Dave do you know what model of sportz you got ? Ty

I'm also thinking .. even though I got full size bed, I'll probably need to get a short bed version because i got tool box up at the cab ??

i'm not sure of my model number but i think they make it a little confusing when you shop for one because mine is for a 6.5' bed on a dodge but i have used it in a short bed chevy and ford with no problem. the reason they ask short or long bed is because the tail gate must be used and that's where the big difference is. the beds are pretty much the same but the the fiberglass poles and tie straps fit slightly different in different model trucks around the tail gate. you wouldn't think it would matter but they are slightly different.

if your tool box is 2' wide or less then i would think a 6.5' model tent would work fine because there are no tie downs or fasteners at the front of the bed where your box is. just on the sides and back by the tail gate......but.......the way the tent fits over the rails in the front may be a little loose with your tool box there. the edges hang over the bed to keep the rain out....kind of a drip edge.

Yea, my toolbox is 2' wide. I guess if it rained that bad I could always jump in the back seat of the crew cab. LOL

Sooo... I'm thinking....

Tent (like above) +
air mattress +
sleeping bags +
riding area w/restrooms...
and I'm pretty good to go for daughter and self.

You can go with a canopy topper too. It would be better in wind and rain plus you can even insulate the insides with construction foam. Going with a lighter colored canopy and roof vent would also help in warmer weather.

i had a fiberglass raised camper top once that had a rubber around the whole front that sealed around cab once it was on,never leaked.
could open rear slider listen to tunes or talk with some one if they was in the back
had tinted windows that no one could see in with screens if you wanted to open, windows was sliders. had a 12volt light and one that run off two d size batteries
had a piece of plywood that i slid in the bed kept my cooler and sleeping bag
i miss it and ruck camping at a blink of a eye

i have a fiberglass cap for my truck and those tufport caps look pretty nice but the main reasons i settled on the sportz tent were.

1. price
2. ease of storage. fits in a duffel bag.
3. one man operation to put up and take down

one suggestion i will make though. if you camp in temps below 40 degrees i would NOT use an air mattress. been there and froze my coin purse off. the air is trapped between the truck surface and your body and will never warm up. :(
