Dragged the latest pile of mystery metal into the garage last week and spent an hour or so stripping it down and starting to mock up the front suspension layout.
Teardown went surprisingly easy, all of the hardware came apart without issue except two of the bolts holding the seat that I had to take the hacksaw to. The bolt ends stuck out below the crossbars on the underside and were bent. Seat itself is shot.
Tried a few positions with the LTZ 400 a-arms to get an idea how it will sit. Full droop in pic.
buggy had equal length arms, the LTZs are unequal, so the lowers will get tucked under the floorpan closer to center with the same alignment as they had on the quad. I have them reversed for front steer, may swap the spindles and put the arms back in the original direction.
Front outside tire to tire width is going to be around 52 inches.
It will definitely need a rack. Even with that i may have to chop the lower tubing at the front corners for tie rod clearance during travel.
Also in the plans are shorter tires -- i think i found some 19s, 22s are on the rims atm. Ironic that i'm killing myself withthe rockhound trying to get taller tires and front brakes on it and this deal is set and ready to go with brakes and bigger tires than it needs or the rockhound has ....
engine (a 125) needs a carb at least and I'll likely bump it up to a bbk kit .
Rear swingarm was pretty butchered, so i'll remake most of that and use the Sunl axle i've been sitting on from the last project. Needs tires and rims.
May not mod the cage layout beyond chopping the rack and tail section off and adding more cross braces up top and a side bar above the existing one.
Welds look better than the last one (Sunl-zuki frame). Little things like welded on wiring harness straps, light mounts and lights that have survived undamaged, and the brake setup, hydraulic with pull rod to a really solid rectangular all metal master/reservoir combo makes it seem more well built quality-wise than i expected.
Maybe being older --2004 --- might account for that ...

Is this the one you mentioned had the gear drive pitman arm? Shoot me some pics if your not gonna use it.
Look forward to watchin the build! Always very resourceful and unique with awesome results!

Here's the steering setup. the connection plate sits on a bit of an angle an looks a bit tweaked. may or may not be the original part since the plate is about the only rusty metal on the buggy. I need to scrape up some funds for a better rack for mine, then transfer my rack to this.

Thanks Xbird. I think I'm gonna put that project on the back burner and just buy a rack.

This only get the front a-arms. The Z's 434? (i think it may have a stroker crank in it on top of the bbk jug) would be a bit much for a 10 y.o. That's already home in my ride and i'm loving it --- 'cept i on-the-gas punched a 3-foot tall stump the other day and fubared an upper arm and tie rod.
BTW, i've looked all over your threads searching for pics of your 400 install, you need to update the thread you started on it with some final pics!
For this, I figured out that to get the tie rod clearance, i'm going to have to set the a-arms with the lowers above and not below the lower frame tube.
power-wise it has a 125cc common style gy6 that i may set up with the smaller 150 bbk kit, with the height of the front tires i'm putting on it, i'm going to find or have made a 41 T rear sprocket so it can run a taller rear tire. It's getting my podiums front and rear, sprung pretty soft.

About time to drag this thread outta mothballs for some updating. Just shy of a year later and I'm just now really getting into the build. cut the floor off and after playing around with the LTZ front, figured a split and widen followed by grafting it onto the front end would be the best route. working out well so far. ....

File comment: Just like the SUNL-ZUKI, one crooked front end assembly. a bit of weld cutting, ratchet strap and that was fixed, but of course the tube the steering mounts to is now crooked. ))) front end tubes have been trimmed back. DSC_0234.JPG [ 3.97 MiB | Viewed 4016 times ]
File comment: LTZ front already widened and welded up getting fitted back in place. shortened tubes got slugged and plug welded. DSC_0003.JPG [ 3.72 MiB | Viewed 4016 times ]
File comment: All burned together. Still need to put in some short tube connections to tie it all together. Waiting til I get steering layout fully figured out. DSC_0009.JPG [ 3.5 MiB | Viewed 4016 times ]
File comment: gets 12 inches of travel, still messing with spindle/steering, front vs rear steer. DSC_0011.JPG [ 3.71 MiB | Viewed 4016 times ]

Threw the bits and pieces roughly into position to get an idea of how it'll look. Not so-little one (she's gonna be taller than me soon) has already been fitted for seat, pedals and headroom. got plenty of length and height for her to grow into.

Getting close to completing the cage. wrapped one side up but for a couple support tubes and the rear hoop supports and rear shock mount setup. That last aspect has to wait until i put the swingarm in position and get my rear shock locations figured out. (Fox podiums)
Meantime, the no-name buggy's rear swingarm is proving to be a fun bit of work.
It looks to have been made as a dual use piece, 125cc GY6 and likely 5-6.5 hp industrial engine since the base has an engine mounting plate with matching industrial engine mount holes. The axle that came with it is too small for the 150cc and tire size parameters of this build so i've got to mod the swingarm to fit the old Sunl SG150 axle.
A couple of years ago, I chopped that swingam up for Rockhound parts, really wish I hadn't, I would have been able to bolt the back end on, drop an engine in and call it done!
So far, i've gotten the new, wider-out bearing hangers plated in and positioned on the swingarm, they'll be getting braced up top and most of the topside framework will need to be shifted so the engine sprocket aligns with the axle sprocket. That old Sunl was a real oddball in that department!

hmmm, guess I never updated this one .... finished this off in early spring. Made an engine support hangar from the oddball deal that came with this thing. used 2 sections of threaded ends cut off old balls joints and welded them to to the hangar bushings stubs. took matching tie rod stubs for left/right threads and welded those together with a nut in the middle to make it an adjustable link.
Added a pair of plate brackets above the engine on the swingarm. I had to trim the welded sprocket shaft a bit and use some shim washers to dial it in to the axle sprocket, but once made, is a honey of a setup.
This setup gives more support to the output shaft than most other stock deals and allows for a very nice fine tuning of chain tension. I lock this in first then tighten the main mount stud. top view of plate brackets
Seat came from the Rockhound, engine conversion to 150cc went very well, aside from a rectifier mis-match leading to some lucas smoke, fired right up and runs strong. No issues all season.
Little one getting ready to go get it--first race of the season, first win! That green mini buggy actually has a 6.5 hp on it and with its tires/gearing, was able to run the course flat out all the time thru the corners, was a close run. http://imgur.com/uSl56nB
more washing machine re-use, body panels
