Hello all, I’ve got a roketa 250 and recently the starter went out. So I replaced it with a new one and now the clutch doesn’t want to engage in either forward or reverse. It acts like it wants to but doesn’t. Forward doesn’t engage at all and reverse does briefly but then comes to an abrupt halt. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciative.

When I have reverse engaged and rotate the rear tires while having it jacked up I can hear like it’s wanting to engage somewhat but it’s not grabbing. Then in forward nothing at all. Also in reverse the clutch will spin with the rotation of the wheels by hand but still nothing in forward. Is it an issue in the gearbox? And should I tear it apart to find out? If so what the steps in doing so?

Also just thought could it be low on gear oil causing this issue?

This has got to be something simple. It was driving great before the starter decided to go out and immediately upon replacing it, NOTHING.... HELP!!!

Did you do anything with the belt or pulleys? Wheels should not be engaging until the engine is running.

Makes me wonder if something happened elsewhere causing the starter to lock up and go bad. I took the starter apart to find that one of the internal magnets blew apart inside.

Start by removing the CVT cover on the left. With the rear jacked up, you should be able to spin the rear tires in either direction and the belt should not move.

Have it neutral then?

No. It is centrifugal clutch. If something else spins but the clutch bell, you have a CVT issue.

Ok I’ll check it out this afternoon when I get home from work. What am I looking for when I get in there? Could it be the weights?

If spinning the wheels spins the belt, the clutch is jammed up. The belt should ride low in the pulley up front and high in the rear until engine RPM forces it work up the front pulley.

Ok here goes: motor off, not running, rear on jack stands, in neutral, wheels spinning, belt does not. Put it in forward, spin wheels, belt doesn’t turn. Put in reverse, spin wheels, belt does spin.
When the engine is running and giving gas, in neutral, both left and right pulleys spin. One goes in and the other out. Motor still running, in forward gear, giving gas, it trying to catch but doesn’t. Motor running, in reverse gear, giving gas, it grabs for about 5 seconds then comes to an abrupt stop. Any clue? I’m lost.

Here are some links that describe how your CVT should act:

Thanks I appreciate those.
From reading both articles of the cvt mine is operating correctly from my understanding of them. Could it not be in the gearbox itself?

Since the CVT is easy to access and repair, I wanted to verify that was not your problem. The next step will be to remove the belt and try to start your engine. If you have the same start issues, it has nothing to do with the rest of the transmission.

The starter motor connects to a one way gear (starter clutch) that sits behind the right engine cover. If the starter cannot spin the motor with the belt off and just free spins, that will be the next place to look.

That makes sense. I’ll look into it and get back at ya. Thanks for helping out.

Update: got the belt off just now and started the motor. Starts right up with no issue.
