Question about Primer and Paint

Hi,
I have a Baja DN 150 I am trying to restore, please see https://www.buggynews.com/restoring-baj ... 51295.html

So I began grinding with wire brush attachment and some sandpaper, and wire brush. I picked up a can of Rustoleum primer (gray) and envisioned doing best I can getting surface rust and then primering it up gray.
But now that I get into it, I thought I would ask as I am only into the can $3.99!
I am getting better results than I thought with the wire brush attachment, I mean going was faster than thought, and didn't even have beer yet.
So I see OE red and I see black over red, and looks like primer over cage of engine.
I think I want to go with red for restoration, though still open on that, but I am going to do the rims (and open to colors!) but what is best way to primer? Any suggestions?
I think maybe I skip over gray primer and use it on rims for primer and back of engine, and go with closer matching to the red or if go with black on rails go with black primer, make sense vs gray primer?
Red makes most sense to match whats already there on floor.
How would YOU do it?

Is hand painting with a brush an option here? It seems that it would be better than spray paint? I could take my time, hit it with primer with a brush, first coat. I could sand it slightly after that? Then spray it whatever color?

If it was me, I would get it sandblasted before I do any painting. I promise that you save a lot of money and time if you get stripped by a blaster. Also, paint adhere better to the texture of blasting. Now if you really want it to look nice, powdercoat it next. It would be more durable and look better then painting it with a aerosol can. Also, you wont stress on the painting process, chips or any other foreign object nicking the freshly painted surface.

Check the gas tank for rust inside. Grab some 3/16" fuel line and a filter from an auto store. Don't worry about the air filter until you get it running and moving under it's own power in forward and reverse. As long as the links in the chain move use it for testing. Most likely you will need a wiring harness https://www.supergy6.com/
Don't buy off of Ebay or Amazon. Those are for scooters and will require a lot of modification.
