Hello all
not sure if this is the right place for this but lets see....

I started off with a kinroad buggy back in 2012 its been super reliable and great fun but its always bothered me that is very fragile in terms of safety, if ever I rolled I think the cage would just fold up
so for some time ive been pondering building something a little more substantial but I also don't want a heavy monster that isent really a buggy anymore, I could start from sctratch and build the chassis and suspension but here in the uk that gives you a problem if you want it to be road legal, it can be done but its very restrictive and it will need to undergo quite exhaustive and expensive tests to enable it to be registered for road use,
however there is an exemption to this if I use a standard chassis and suspension of a production vehicle and mearly make a new body for it , this would be classed as a rebody and requires nothing more than a visual inspection from the appropriate dept and its good to remain on the road
so that's the route im going to go down , trying to find a vehicle that has a small lightweight chassis is not easy but Suzuki Vitara/sidekick springs to mind and I have a few kicking around so that's what im intending to use at this point , I could use the standard Suzuki engine and box its about 105 bhp so might be lively enough but with all the space that exists I may as well use a V8 since they make a nice noise lol,
non of this is new to me I built one 16 years ago and that stood up to plenty of abuse, suzukis have a reputation for being a bit fragile but I think that stems from the front axel that is aluminium and does have a history of exploding but in this instance I want to be rear wheel drive only so its going in the bin where it wont cause me any issues, I never broke the back axle before as the wheels just spin up if your over zealous with the accelerator it might be different if you were on tarmac or landing with the power on but time will tell ….
so the sidekick chassis looks like this, its mainly 2"x4" box section with independent front suspension and a live rear axle located by by a 4 link or 5 if you count the panhard rod all simple robust stuff, front axle and drive shafts just unbolt in fact you can buy them as 2 wd in some territories , I can pick up a bare chassis and walk with it so it cant be that heavy I will weigh it all as I go im aiming to be well under a ton when its finished maybe 800kg or 1760 lbs in your language :)
hers a few pics of the last one i made a long time ago

The bonnet height will be limited by the height of your engine. If you can use a FWD drive car engine with transaxle and place it in the rear, you will have that low bonnet plus better rear wheel traction.

The Subaru flat H engine is lower profile if you want stick with the idea keeping the engine up front.

Hi
Funny you should mention the subaru engine as ive given it serious consideration but the lack of a suitable rear wheel drive gearbox is a bit of a stumbling block, ive got a forrester engine here and am working on an adapter plate to get it to bolt up to the RX8 gearbox but for now im sticking with the V8, the limiting factor is the suspension towers cant really get the bonnet lower than them. The engine sits below them quite nicely

hello guys

well I made a bit of progress, had to swap to a soarer sump instaed of the ls400 so the low part is further rearward letting the engine go down lower

Image

then I jigged of the original cars crossmember for the engine mounts

Image

Image

that got the engine in nice and low

Image

then I started making a base layer out of 2" box for the tube work to weld to

This looks awesome! The one you previously made looked pretty sweet too. What engine did you end up going with? What’s your build goals? Just curious, I’m eager to see where this goes. Good luck on the rest of the build!

hi

well im trying to build something a little more robust than the Chinese buggies out there, something i can rub up a tree when im sliding sideways and not have it fold up, the engine and box i have used is from a lexus GS430 they are cheap power over here, 330 hp quad cam more than enough for a buggy , im using a sidekick chassis as in the uk its a pain in the arse to get a buggy road legal but if you use an unmodified vehicle chassis you can then retain the title and keep the buggy road legal,
im quite lucky in that i have my own track that ive biult over the years, smoothish grass through the woods, what i would like is half a dozen buggies so we can all have race days so this suzuki based buggy is a proto type to see if this is the way forward it might not be i only really chose the suzuki as its a way to be road legal its a bit too big really i would like something a bit smaller and have also been playing around with mazda mx5 bits and that has promise too so i might go that way yet,

Image

but on the suzuki based one ive made the bulkhead but that just showed that the brake servo and the steering column wanted to live in the same space lol so ive had to throw the brake master cylinder and servo over to the other side

and the intended use for it

and the same track in a Chinese buggy from 10 years ago when the wood was a mear youngster

well i made some progress but alas it wasn't with the suzuki buggy ...
i started fiddling with the mx5 frame i had made earlier while i was waiting for some lazer cuts to come back for the steering column support on the suzuki, well once i started fiddling i couldn't stop lol

may as well just post some pics you can see where im going

Very nice fabrication work!

Post subject:  Re: Car Based buggy

its all basic stuff starting to look a bit on the overkill side now but ive never been able to draw stuff up on cad and work it all out before i build it ..
so i have to make something stand back look at it and think " what i should have done is" once i can see how big something needs to be its much easier to make a better job of it, i can see several tubes i have duplicated and could replace with one, but this will be fine as a test bed next one will be much lighter and less busy with the tubes, will use a 4 cylinder mazda engine and maybe 1.5" box section tube through out i can see merit in using the mx5 suspension and drive train not least the availability of spare parts, when i break something on my kinroad the buggy can be out of use for weeks trying to source spares for it

Using easily available mx5 parts I think is a good idea. I’ve been passively looking at some kit cars and think the mx5 is the best donor for cost/quality, so I expect the same holds true for a custom buggy.
