I got a 2008 Joyner SS650 from a guy said he was riding it and went to put it away and it won't start. he messed with the distributor and coil look's like he put on a Coil from a Vw or car. he cut the wire's from the distributor there is a black wire with a white stripe and a red wire the wire from the coil still has the plug on there its a grey with black stripe and a black wire with a red wire. which of those go to the + on the coil? i'm assuming i need to try to put it back to check the distributor and coil to trouble shoot?

Great being back...

My recommendation would be to use a multimeter to check to see what those wires are receiving. One should be receiving +12 with the key switch on, and that should go to your + on the coil. It should be grounded with the key switch on. Without seeing pictures, that is my best guess.

Ok, first do you have a multimeter, and do you know how to use it?

If you do, then put it in the voltage mode. With the kart connected to a good battery, connect the black (negative) lead of the multimeter to a good ground on the kart. Then use the red lead (positive) to see if there is power on either of those wires. When you are doing this, make sure the key of the buggy is on. If the multimeter reads +12 volts when you touch it to the wire, turn the key off and see what the voltage reads on the multimeter again. If there is no voltage with the key off, then that is your signal wire to allow the engine to run. Connect it to the + on the coil.

The coil also needs a ground to the - post on the coil. Switch the multimeter to the continuity or ohms setting, then probe the wires until you find one that is nearly 0 ohms. Connect this to the - post on the coil. Now, you can check for spark.

ok on the red wire in the distributor i get 1.7 and the black/white i get the same assuming i'm doing it right. i think PO took out the distributor as the nut on the adjust is mission. i'm using a portable one from radio shack. i put it on ac correct then red on the wire and black on a ground correct?

The coil is powered by 12vdc. The Hall sensor in the distributor is what switches it on and off based on the magnet passing the sensor.

The distributor should have timing marks that correspond to when the engine is at TDC. You can then mechanically advance the distributor but it also has a vacuum advance once the engine is spinning.

Look up posts from GhostHunter and JBQuadRider to get more details on timing.

ok but won't i need to find what wire's go were before this?

Yes, CaptHwdy, the wiring needs to be hooked up first. The multimeter needs to be set to dc volts, not ac. That's probably why you were getting the odd 1.7v readings

ok do you know of a diagram for the wiring? also do you have a pic of what the fuse's are labeled ? the box in the front had some water in there and t here is a jumper wire the PO put on were one of the fuse's go and there is 3 spots without fuses

I do not have a wiring or fuse diagram for your particular machine. I usually just try to figure things out on a case-by-case basis, especially if there are PO modifications made.

With respect to the fuses, the fuse block housings sometimes have a physical spot for the fuse (which would be used on other similar go kart models that use the same fuse block housing) but these fuse slots do not have metal contacts installed from the factory. On the ones that are missing, check to see if there is a metal contact on both sides of where the fuse would be placed. If there are not, then no fuse is supposed to go there. If there are metal contacts, then who knows. It would be a matter of tracing wires to see where they go at that point.

This thread had similar issues and suggestions, sounds like no one has a wiring diagram, but you shouldn't really need it.

anyone know what size nut goes on the stud for the Distributor to adjust spark?
PO never put it on and i need it to install new distributor in.

ok well i put in the new distributor and coil and still getting no spark what am i mission? i turn the crank to tdc on the punch out turn the oil so it perpendicular to the cam . i tried it with the line on the distributor with the dot on the shaft and with out and still nothing.

Are you getting +12v to the coil's + terminal and a good ground to the coil's negative terminal?

no i'm not getting 12 volt the harbor freight one doesn't see anything just a -
and the radio shack one start's at 300.00 something and just goes down to 1.7 there is a jumper wire the PO put in there but i don't know what that goes to unless someone know's

when it's on TDC is it suppose to be on the A or the little circle? now madder what i do when i match up the 1 and 2 on the distributor it's at cylinder 2. there only way it's a cylinder 1 is if i put the cap on cylinder 1 is that the right way?

I appreciate you trying to help me smitty but i guess i'm on my own. doesn't look like the other 650 owners are active on here anymore

Even with timing off, cranking the engine should give you spark. If you do not have power at the coil when the ignition switch is turned on or spark on a plug when the engine is cranking, you need trace down wiring from ignition switch to coil. Remember that power needs to be on the coil during run and start switch positions. It can be damaged wiring or fuse box or it can be faulty ignition switch or poor connector contact at a plug. You need to trace it back visually and with your meter until you find the problem.

the only 2 wire's on the coil should be from the distributor correct?
